A Year of Change

The number 40 has a lot of significance, especially in the Bible but it also is the length of time until Christmas! When I think of it, it’s easy to get overwhelmed as there’s so much to do before the end of the year.

Yesterday was another busy day. Lori’s procedure went well and she’s good to go for another 5 years. Ty is making great progress at school and Jag was at school for over 12 hours including basketball from about 4 until 8 pm! We think he’s the only sophomore that is going to be on the varsity basketball team. We should know for sure in a few days. He’s sure worked hard and deserves it but we’ll have to wait and see.

Today I’m headed down the hill and Lori, who is in the shower right now at 5:10, has to be at work at 7 am. I’ll drop her off and then come back to get the boys for school.

Time to run, do something nice for someone you don’t know today! Hold open a door, or my favorite, buy the person behind you in line at Starbucks, their coffee. I do this from time to time when in the car hoping that maybe they’ll do the same for someone else. Anyhow, enjoy the day, it’ll be over soon and never be back! May God Bless everyone.

Today, 11/13/17, also signifies a passage from Deuteronomy which is as follows,

^13 So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul— ^14 then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil. ^15 I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.

^16 Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. ^17 Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and he will shut up the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you.

Now you can interpret this as you want but it basically means there’s only one true God. I won’t go into this but if you’re interested, it’s easy to read more, just pick up a bible!

Today we also have air pollution so bad in New Delhi that flights have been cancelled, an outbreak of Legionaries disease in California and a school in Florida that is selling bullet proof panels for kids to put in to their backpacks. What a World. I’m sure there’s some good news but the news rarely shows that, ha. I can’t get away from the thoughts of a simpler life as I keep finding old photographs and memorabilia in Mom’s house that seem to indicate a much happier time. I do know that even 50 or 100 years ago, they had their own challenges but most of those were due to the times and not self induced as they are these days. Recently, every night I end up dreaming about when I was a kid or when my parents or grandparents were kids after spending hours looking through old stuff from the family. Guess that’s what happens when you conjure up old memories from things you find that you haven’t seen or thought of for 40 or 50 years. I did find my Lowa hiking boots I had resoled 4 times and basically lived in during high school. They still look like they have a few years left in them but they’re size 11 1/2 and I’m now a 12!

Today Lori has a colonoscopy, not really fun but something everyone should do. Both boys have lots of work and so do I. Later in the week I’ll be in Denver helping Tom get ready for Derek and the movers. Looks like rain, snow and wind on Friday when they’re supposed to come, figures, ha.

It’s 11 days until Thanksgiving and then the holiday season will be here in full force. Around here both boys have been playing Christmas music for a good month as they can’t get enough of it. I have a few trips to take and am out of town the 2 or 3 weeks after Thanksgiving before being done for the year. I hate traveling this time of year as it’s so crowded, but you do what you have to do.

No b ball today for Jag, but starting tomorrow, he has practice 6 days in a row. The following week the boys are off for Thanksgiving but he does have practice every day except Wednesday and Thursday. They’re pretty darn serious this year which is a welcome change for the team. Both boys picked out some new basketball and workout clothes at the store yesterday. I really didn’t want to spend the money but we’re all for them participating in sports. It makes such a difference in how they feel and is so good for them, plus they needed the gear. Soon skiing will start too, oh boy.

Watching the news this morning is a stark reminder of how much we’ve changed as a society. Some people are just lost. I don’t know if the things that go on today happened 50 years ago (I suspect not) or if the media is just so much more widespread that we see and hear every bad thing in the Country within minutes of happening. I do think there is a disconnect with the values most of us were taught as kids by our parents. A big problem is the one parent or no parent family. You can’t lay all of this on that though as most of us reading were raised partly by one parent, at least for part of our life. I don’t understand how people do not respect the sanctity of life. I believe a lot of it has to do with the “culture of violence” that everyone from musicians to celebrities to Hollywood and video games promote every minute of every day, and have done for decades. Rappers and movie stars and video games glorify murder and violence and disrespect for authority. Then these same people protest any real life violence and blame everyone but themselves. It’s so hypocritical it’s comical. I guess that’s what sells though and nothing matters much if it makes someone money, ha. I think we’re going to try going electronic free up here for Thanksgiving week, meaning no phones and no computers, for the boys. Lori and I of course still need to work. Thankfully we’ve pretty much kicked the video game addiction. Guess I’ll move on but it’s so sad to see the direction we as a society seem to be headed. I’d like to move the family to even a more rural area where many of the old time values still exist. In reality though, you can’t run and hide from things so perhaps we need to try and change things before it’s too late.

I found some great old pictures of Shelly when she was a baby and others when she was a little girl like 3 years old up to 8 or 9. I’ll have to get these to her. There are also a bunch of pics of dad when he was young and so on. There’s even an old tin type photo from some relative a hundred years ago or so. It’ll take some time to get through all the papers and photos but I hope to put things on discs and send to each of us kids.

Derek comes this week and has a two big days of work packing things up. Even after they take a bunch of furniture, there is still going to be a lot left. Tom and I are each taking some but in the end, we’ll need to probably donate some stuff. We did find some good outlets for some of the old clothes where they’ll go to good use. In any case, still lots to do.

Ok, that’s it, we need to move! I don’t know how, where or when, but no way we can squeeze anything else into our little house. The way it feels, you might say we live in a “tiny” house, like the ones on tv! Of course there’s no solution right around the corner but we definitely do not have enough space. More to come.

Jag’s first basketball practice was good and we’re off again in about an hour to this mornings practice which is from 8 to 11. Then it looks like we’re off to Denver. Tomorrow, no matter what, we’re sleeping in!

Lori had two late emergency cases (everyone’s an emergency, ha) at work so she was there until 6 when she had to leave to get home before Ty so he could get into the house. Hard to believe it’s November 11th. Today is Veterans Day, make sure to thank a veteran today as they are directly responsible for all the freedoms you enjoy in life. We probably should still have mandatory military service, or a draft, in this Country as then we wouldn’t have a Country full of  such disconnected youth. I’ll stop at that but I think it’d be a bit different around here if everyone of our kids was taught some discipline, respect and work ethic when they were young.

It’s nice up here but cool. Jag and I were in Denver yesterday and there was so much smog it looked like Shanghai China. Say what you will but at least we do live in clean fresh air. Time to run, I think we’ll go to the gym while Jag is at practice. Hope you all are well, take care and God Bless.

What a week, thankfully it’s Friday, finally. Ty’s team won all their games big time. The other team didn’t score many points at all. It sort of looked like pros playing a college or high school team. We were done by a bit after 7 and home by 7:30. Tonight Jag has his first official basketball practice. Then tomorrow at 8 am is his second and we’re off with b ball six days a week!

It was a nice day yesterday but cool. That’s ok though as that’s the mountains. The days and weeks are going fast. Soon the year will be over. I have so much to do it’s overwhelming just to think about it. I’m slowly getting the garage cleaned up. The problem is every time I get a little cleaned up, more stuff magically appears. I bought a bunch more plastic storage containers to box more stuff up. I refuse to rent a third storage unit so some things just have to go.

No rant today, although there’s so much I could talk about, I just don’t have the energy. Guess I’ll run, have a good day and a great weekend, GB.

The German authorities looked on without intervening.^[1][2] The name Kristallnacht comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues were smashed.

Someday it may be Constitutionalists who are targeted, or gay people, or even people of one race. Time for everyone to take a step back and as the Italians say, tranquillo, meaning calm down or relax. In any case, today also marks the 313th day of the year meaning we have 52 days left until 2018! So, what do you all want for Christmas? Time to get shopping!

Now to the day, Ty has a basketball game tonight, Jag has a light day at school and no practice before having 7 practices in 8 days, I’m off to Denver and Lori has a light day too as her doc is gone today. The snow is gone but it’s cool as it’s November in the mountains. We all watched Home Alone last night and even though we’d seen it many times, we still all laughed. I picked up sushi to go from Matsu last night which was a treat.

It’s here, the white stuff, snow! We don’t have a lot, maybe 3 or 4 inches, but the way it was coming down last night, you’d think we’d have a foot. I think it’s over for a while and will be in the 40’s and 50’s for the next few days. We’re getting close to that time of year when we’ll have snow pretty much on a regular basis until March or April. Time to book some Hawaii tickets for the kids break in February.

I guess the movers made it to Mom’s and loaded up all Robin’s stuff. Tom has done a ton of work, not only boxing up all the stuff Robin wanted but also in continuing to clean up the house. Cleaning off Mom’s bed so Tasha’s movers could get it was a chore in itself. We’ll go help again in a few days as there’s still a ton to do.

It’s been a crazy year. Of course there’s the obvious but there’s also lots of things in all of our lives that have made it a somewhat challenging year. From external forces such as politics, class warfare, and the economy and work, to those closer to home like health, school, bills, relationships, and more, it’s been a year where you really have to look at things through rose colored glasses. You can’t let yourself or your loved ones fall into the trap where things seem lost. There’s still more good in this World than bad. I’m a firm believer that the media, broadcast and even more so, social, exploit the bad in the World, which shapes peoples views and attitude towards life. Video games and their violence alone play a big part in devaluing life with all our kids, yet no one talks about that. Violence is prevalent in everything we see from sports to movies, we glorify it. Today’s youth are easily led by powers that use them for their own purpose. Most kids joining groups these days, that are protesting everything from income equality to the President, don’t even know what they’re protesting about. When did working hard and being successful and yes, becoming “rich” (which is a relative term) become a bad thing? People with money create jobs, spend money and are usually generous. Yet some politicians have effectively branded anyone who has made some money with a scarlet letter as being a bad person. We’re raising a generation of kids that don’t want to work and expect things to be handed to them. Trust me socialism and communism are not good things. I fear by the time the next generation realizes these things, it’ll be too late. As I’ve said before, it’s easy to give up or lose some of your constitutional rights but nearly impossible to get them back.

I made it down and up as scheduled. I must have drove 250 miles yesterday between all my meetings and picking both boys up from basketball. The news is showing snow in Denver but we’re pretty clear up here with nothing on the ground so far. Official basketball practice for Jag starts this Friday but that’s just another day as he’s been practicing about every day for 3 weeks now. The kid is pretty darn good and getting better every day.

I stopped by school yesterday on the way home to drop Jag a couple pieces of pizza as a snack. I also had to pay for half of his China trip. I think I mentioned they told us on Friday he was going and wanted payment on Monday. I asked the lady in the business office what happens if someone couldn’t pay today and she told me, well then they don’t go. So I had to whip out my credit card for the $2250 charge, ugh. A lot of people up here obviously have a lot more money than us, ha. Throw in Ty’s camp for next year ($2400) and Jag’s tuition for the month ($2100) and it’s a big month! I think I’ll plan to win the lottery this week.

Lori is working away as usual. Her surgeon was really tired yesterday and cancelled the last surgery and went home. The guy had an open sore like some kind of cut or something which is a no no for surgery. I’m off to the gym at 7 this morning so Lori is taking the boys to school. She goes tomorrow morning as we trade off as one of us needs to take the kids. Ty has a basketball game tonight and Jag practice. Hard to believe it’s already November 7th. It’ll be Christmas and then 2018 before we know it. We have a lot to do before the year is over. What we need is a trip to Hawaii as we’ve lost all our tan, ha. Plus there’s something about the sun and the ocean that re-energizes you. We could never live there but it’s sure a nice place to visit.

We have a lot going on this week as usual. Starting this morning, I’m off to Denver after dropping Jag for a meeting at the distributor. I hope to be back by 3 if the roads are ok. Lori has a big day as there were a couple of emergency surgeries over the weekend. Ty has school as usual and a big project he’s working on. Both boys have b ball tonight until a bit after 6 pm. I won’t even get into tomorrow but it’s just as fun filled as today.

Yesterday Lori and the boys had their Canine Companion meeting which went well. The Broncos were crushed which is becoming a weekly trend. Our coach needs to be fired and we desperately need a quarterback. No snow up here so I’ll take the truck down today as I have an appointment to drop it off for service. I think the snow is arriving tomorrow. I think Tom also said the movers are coming tomorrow to pick up Robins stuff. I need to go down and move out our drums and other stuff we were storing at Mom’s house since we moved, ugh.

I’ve been doing pretty well with no phone and no sugar. Jag is too! We’re trying to get Ty on board but he’s a little tougher. Time to throw out all the remaining Halloween candy. We bought a rice cooker over the weekend along with a juicer but the juicer is going back today. It really doesn’t work as advertised. Hopefully the rice cooker will as the kids love rice. Time to get the good looking one (Lori) up! Then 15 minutes later, both boys.

Tragic shooting yesterday in Texas by a felon who legally wasn’t allowed to own any guns. Yet the democrats, who just last week said not to politicize the Muslim who drove a truck into a crowd in New York, were calling for gun control before the bleeding stopped. How hypocritical, but not surprising. Thankfully an armed citizen stopped this nut or it might have been worse. When a guy drives a truck into a crowd, you blame the driver, not the truck, but when there’s a shooting, they don’t blame the shooter, they blame the gun, hmmm. And then there’s the daily shootings in Chicago where people are literally shot daily and hundreds are killed every year yet the democrats ignore that, hmmm. Must be because the Dems are in control in Chicago and Illinois and they have the strictest gun laws in the Country. I’m so sick of all the politicians, time to install term limits.

I’d better go before I go off on a rant. Be careful and watch your back, as it’s a different World than it was 20 years ago. People, especially those despondent, don’t value life anymore. There’s a number of factors that go into this that no one mentions such as Hollywood who glorifies violence, the media and all the crap they put on tv, social media, (this is a big one!) , video games, and celebrities who think that because they entertain us in movies that they somehow know what’s best for all of us, (just like senile politicians), to mental illness that our society ignores. We throw away people daily as our system is one that doesn’t care for those that need help. All you have to do is look at the VA as an example. Whoops, looks like I am going off on a rant. I’ll stop now.

Last night we went to the school gala/fundraiser. It was fun once the dinner started and our friends showed up, but we left pretty early. These things are always so so. They try to guilt you in to giving them more money on top of the $26,000 per year you spend on your kid. A small number of people step up but they have millions, if not billion of dollars. For example four people donated $25,000 each to fund the building of a tiny house on an old bus the school owns. I leaned over the one of our friends sitting next to me and said, “$25,000 to build a tiny house? I LIVE in a tiny house!”. In any case, it was ok and we were home by 9:30.

I decided to leave my cell phone at home last night and it made me wonder, how did we ever manage without cell phones? Could I do without one? It would be difficult work wise but even if you take that out, could I go without it on a personal level. One thing’s for sure, the family would need to communicate, or plan out our day better as to when the kids would need to be picked up, etc. So, to start, I’m going to begin by giving it up except for between 7 and 5 on weekdays and on the weekends. Ty just came up and I told him my plan to which he replied, “you’re not going to give up your phone”. Sounds like a challenge to me. We’ll see how this works. Maybe I’ll have to end up compromising and just text for a while to get used to it.

It’s raining up here but the 5 to 10 inches of snow we were supposed to get doesn’t seem to be coming. I guess we’ll get a little on and off, mostly tomorrow night, we’ll see. The kids have their Canine Companion meeting today at 11 am. Lori is going to take them as the Bronco game starts at the same time. I’m making chili today but first I think we’re all going to the gym. We also need to pick up Mojo from doggie daycare where he spent the day and night as we were in Denver for most of the day yesterday.

Looks like we’re going to Breckenridge for Thanksgiving. Lori’s friend Brooke, who used to work for her at Dr. Rodgers in Denver, along with Ashley, another girl who works there, and us, are all getting our families together at Brooke’s parents house. We’re having surf and turf as neither Brooke or Lori are big on turkey. Of course we’ll be making one here the day before just so we have leftovers which are the best part of the holiday.

Guess I’ll get moving, think about whether or not you can do without your phone, even just for one day! I’m sure you and I can, as we all survived without them for most of our lives. On the other hand, I’m sure most of you won’t give it a try. Oh well, life goes on, have a great day and God Bless.
