A Year of Change

The above title is mostly correct, we’re pretty much back in the groove but not quite all the way. It’s 5am and I could have got out of bed at 3, but I managed to go back to sleep for a couple of hours.

Yesterday Lori and I hit the gym hard for an hour. I’m down about 7 pounds from when I walked off the plane which is good, but have a few more pounds to go. It’s hard in Europe as there’s lots of bread, pasta and croissants, especially in France. The body though is an amazing organism. It’ll respond quickly to good choices, the problem is most people can’t commit to sticking with good choices for any length of time. You have to go “all in”. You can’t eat healthy one meal and then say to yourself, “I’ll just have a little bit of dessert”, as it doesn’t work that way. Enough about that, to each their own.

Jag worked yesterday afternoon as he has a job with a marketing company where he takes surveys of people visiting Vail. He goes to events like Blues, Brews, and BBQ, which was in Beaver Creek yesterday, and tries to get people to answer questions and then records them on an I-pad. He makes $15 an hour which is pretty good for a 15 year old. Lori reminded him she made $10 an hour when she worked at Whole Foods! It rained most of the afternoon but he managed to get his 20 surveys in. He said only 3 or 4 people told him no, which is a high percentage of participation. He’s pretty approachable though and I can see most people talking to him. It’s also good for him to just approach people he doesn’t know as it helps with self confidence. he can work all summer depending on his schedule.

Yesterday Ty and his friend Cole went to the movies. Earlier in the day, Lori and I stopped to get the mail and there was a heavy box for Ty. When we made it home, he opened it and it was a fire extinguisher. I asked why he ordered that and he said Cole did on his Amazon account using gift cards he had. I guess Cole doesn’t have an Amazon account. He took it to the movies and said he was going to put it in our ski locker until after the movie. I didn’t think anymore of it. When Ty came home, he showed us video on his phone of he and Cole shooting it off in the woods after the movies. White smoke was everywhere and they were laughing and spinning around blasting this thing off. I should have known they would be doing something with it. Boys will be boys.

Today Lori and I need to run down the hill to Denver as I have to drop off a gift I carried back from Italy at a key account that I have not seen in a long time. Then Tina and Jeff are having their “Kick off the Summer” party that we’ll stop at before heading home. Before that we’ll make a few stops at a few stores. Luckily we’re all off tomorrow. Next Friday we’re off to Hawaii for 10 days. We have the Kapalua Wine Festival and although I don’t need to work it, I do have a couple key dinners that I need to go to. Good news is the Company covers like 90% plus of our expenses. Should be fun as we rented a 2 bedroom villa on the world famous Kapalua Golf Course across the street from the Ritz. This way we have our own kitchen and all amenities so we can cook our own meals. Aleks from Slovenia and Kristin from Oregon, who works for me, will be working the festival.

Guess I’ll run and grab another cup of coffee. I wish one of our gyms opened earlier but on Sundays, only one is open and it opens at 7. Lori and I both had headaches yesterday and I still do a bit. I think (hope) it’s allergies otherwise I’m getting a bit of a cold. I went to bed early last night trying to kick it which is why I’m up early. Have a great Sunday and we’ll talk to you all soon. This morning I woke up at 4:51am as I’m still a bit on Italian time. It usually takes a few days to get acclimated to the 8 hour change.

Yesterday was the last day of school. I picked up both boys around noon and we then stopped to pick Mom and Danica in her office, some lunch. I spent most of the day doing laundry and catching up on things here back home. I think I fell asleep with a load still in the dryer. Ty had an end of school party at the Resnicks last night from 5:30 until 8. Their house is this huge home with everything from a pool to an indoor full size basketball court. It was nice of them to have the 7th grade class over for some fun. Meanwhile I took Jag and his buddy Ethan into town where they went to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Ethan’s mom picked them up and dropped off Jag around 10pm.

Today Jag starts a summer job which is for a marketing company. He’ll be taking surveys from about 100 people a day at various events. I think he works today and tomorrow afternoon. We’re supposed to go to Denver tomorrow for a party so not sure how he’ll get to work. He’s trying to earn some money for his D.C. trip in July.

Now to the events of the World. I’ve largely stayed away from the carnage going on but I’m sure you’ve all read or heard of the bombing of children in London at a concert of one of Ty’s favorite musicians, or the massacre yesterday of over 20 Christians in Egypt which also included a dozen children. The head of the Dept. of Homeland Security yesterday said that if us (U.S. citizens) knew what he knows, we’d never leave our house! Now of course you can’t live your life this way but you do need to be vigilant. This week is Ramadan and chances are high, if not 100%, that there will be more attacks. None of us know when or where, and again, we can’t hide in our homes, but when you’re out and about, at the mall or the movies, or anywhere for that matter, but especially soft targets with crowds, you do need to have a new sense of awareness. Sadly it’s a new World, and not for the better. I sometimes wish the boys could grow up in times like Lori and I did in the 60’s and 70’s. You need to be aware, take care to be safe, and watch your six, which in military terms means, watch your back as it refers to the location of 6 o’clock on a clock, which if you’re standing, would be directly behind you! After traveling for 20 hours, I landed in Denver at 2:15 in the afternoon. Once I cleared Customs and grabbed my bag, I was in my truck by 2:45 heading up the hill to home. I pulled into Vail around 5pm and stopped at Zach’s where the boys were getting dressed for Prom to see Jag. Lori was already there with the other Mom’s.  The 4 boys looked sharp! Lori then went into town to The Sebastian, where Prom was being held, to check out all the kids and see the group picture. I went on home to unload and take a shower.

Today is the last day of school and Jag wants to stay home saying “I’m not even going there next year”. Both boys are bummed still about changing schools and so is Lori. Sure I’d like for them to stay also but if you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it, right. Oh well, not sure what else to say about it, some of the other parents are even wanting to go to the Principal and lobby for us.

Ty goes to camp July 2nd and Jag is going to Washington DC with Zach to stay at Harmon’s for a week so Lori and I will be alone. Ty isn’t back until the 3rd week of July and Jag on the 9th I think. Hawaii might be back on as after being with Aleks in Slovenia, who I have going over, I might need to be there. Will keep you posted as that’s a week from today. The kids want to go and Lori already has it on the calendar so we might be on a beach in a week. I will need to find a last minute deal on a place to stay which I should be able to do.

I guess Prom was fun although I was asleep when Jag made it home around midnight. Ty has an end of year party tonight and then we have a 3 day weekend. Lori has two or three girls out today so she’ll be late. I need to get to the gym as it’s been too long with too much bread, and pasta. Time to run, have a good day and good 3 day weekend. GB

It’s about 8:30pm Colorado time Wednesday night and I’m sitting in the Florence Aeroporto waiting for my flight to Munich. Once there I have like 3 hours until I board for Denver. It was a good trip, long but good. I am looking forward to getting home though. We had a nice lunch at the Bocelli’s and they presented me with a framed photo that Andrea and Alberto wrote a nice inscription on thanking me for everything over the years. This was over the top and not expected or necessary, but nice. After that, we headed into Florence to check into our hotel and then all went into town to shop, sightsee and have a drink. Here’s some pictures. Below there’s Andrea who came in and said, “Hi, I’m Andrea and I want to be a singer when I grow up”, he was of course making a joke. Then Alberto and me, then a nice photo their Mom showed me of them when they were younger, me on the bus and of course, the Domo in Florence. Yesterday we left early in the morning to go to Podere Ciona which is Lorenzo’s estate. We arrived at 9:15 am and it was great to see him and his parents again. Franca and Franco (his mom and dad) asked right away about Lori and the boys and wanted to see pictures. They’ve known Jag since he was 4 months old and Ty since he was a baby too. They love the boys and always want an update. After an early lunch we headed back to get ready for our Grand Tasting. We had about 30 of our winemakers come from as far away as Austria to set up tables and show our team their wines. After this tasting from about 4 until 8pm, we all had dinner together. The food was amazing with my favorite being roast rabbit, but it all was good. Many of these people I’ve known for 15 years so it’s always good to see them as they’re in many ways like family.

Today we check out about 11am and head to the Bocelli’s. We’ll have lunch with Andrea and Veronica and then head to Florence around 4. Then tomorrow we fly home. It’s been a great trip but a long one. Here’s a few pictures. Below is last nights sunset in Tuscany and then one in Avignon France. It is the Palace de Papes or Palace of the Popes. This is where they’d come for vacation and was out the door of my hotel. Then there’s Kristin who is like my 35 year old daughter who Lori and the boys know well. She runs Oregon and Hawaii and then Greg and I who handles Florida and Georgia and was in the military for 18 years! And of course, our buddy Lorenzo. So, that’s it for today, can’t wait to get home. We made it to Italy and our home for the next three nights. It’s a new building/resort at one of our estates with big rooms and a spa underneath the property. Yesterday was a long day as we went to Montalcino around 8:30am and returned around 10pm. Today we’re all off to Lorenzo’s at 7:30am and then will be back to meet 30 of our winemakers around 3 in the afternoon. After the Grand Tasting, we then will all have a catered dinner together. Tomorrow we go to the Bocelli’s and then fly home Thursday leaving around 10pm Wednesday night Colorado time.

I’m jumping around here as I don’t have much time. I will post pictures and more details when flying home on my 10 hour flight. Thank God I’m in Business Class.

Jag and Ty and Mom are working hard to finish up the year strong. Ty scored an A on his Science test yesterday but over 20 pages of work on Germany, which was his big project, disappeared from the computer. We all saw his work and he and Mom are freaking out so tomorrow morning (Tuesday for you all) Lori will go into school early to try to get the technology teacher to help resurrect his work or basically, find the freakin file! Jag said he thinks he’s doing well on his finals which knowing him, I’m sure he is. He wrote out over 800 characters/letters in Mandarin the other day, 800 characters!

I miss everyone at home and thankfully can text with Lori 20 or more times a day. It’s been a good trip and everyone is learning a lot and these kind of things are needed to connect our people with our winemakers and the products they sell. It does seem though nas if I’ve been gone a month!

We arrived in Slovenia around noon and went right to work tasting wines and eating again! After touring a few of our estates, we then headed to dinner at 8:30. It was amazing, but did last until midnight. We were the only ones in the restaurant which was in a house and it was over the top. Once I get back I’ll post a bunch of pictures.

Right now I’m on a train from Venice to Florence which takes about 2 hours. I finally got some sleep last night (6 hours) as in the previous 3 days, I had only 17 hours total! The weather is good today, sunshine and about 70-75.

Guess I’ll run, sorry to hear about the boys not happy they’re not getting to go back to their school, but it is what it is. Maybe we could start a fund to pay for their tuition, ha. Good luck with that one.

Good morning, we had another white out yesterday and we woke up to snow covered mountains, decks and cars. Fabulous…seriously rethinking this move.

Jagger’s English teacher had the students write a “personal crafted piece” to be turned in for her eyes only and she then decided on Thursday to have the students share with the class, claiming the classroom is a “Safe Place” to share personal thoughts. Jagger said he was perfectly fine to turn his assignment in to his teacher, but the requested content was very personal and he didn’t want to share with the class. If he had known he would need to share with the class he would have constructed a completely different piece. The kids are only graded on the piece…not sharing. He asked if I would pick him up early and stated his reasons and logic sufficiently, so I picked him up early.

Ty got all of his missing assignments turned in for full credit because they were absent missing which means he was absent the day the content was addressed in class. He is on Student Council and an Advisory Committee and they all went out for Chinese food for a celebration. Ty’s Mandarin teacher is the Advisory lead, so they all ordered in Mandarin.  He said he had a great day until he got back to school for Science and Mr. Falk had the class watch a live vaginal birth. He said it was so gross…the baby was covered in blue slime. Poor guy…I don’t remember ever watching a live birth, not even in my prenatal classes.

One of the upper class teachers approached Jagger and asked if he would prefer to stay at VMS to which he replied, “Of Course”. When he got in the car he stated, “What the Hell”, they all know the we aren’t staying because $52,000 plus school trips and sports…more like $60,000 is too much of a financial strain for our family.

Ty’s class received their enrichment classes yesterday and his name wasn’t up on the board, so when he in got the car he was sad as well. He told me VMS added new computer coding classes and virtual reality computer design for next year, so that added to how bummed he was/is.

I’m cleaning today. Jagger is studying for finals and Ty is finishing up his  History project and a Graphic Novel on history as well. Ty would have all his homework in on time with straight A’s if every assignment was in Graphic Novel form. There’s a suggestion for the schools that would certainly benefit my kiddo.

Doug is enjoying, “Italian Disneyland” so he can fill you all in on the European adventure’s tomorrow.

For me, I woke up early and we all drove back to our Rose estate where we visited until about noon. Then it was off to Chateauneuf de Pape to Château de la Gardine. Upon our arrival at this iconic estate, we had a quick meeting and then they took us all downstairs and outside to 20 waiting ATV’s. This was a surprise and we all jumped on our four wheelers and headed out for a tour into the vineyards and surrounding area. We also drove to the ruins of the old castle that was the Pope’s summer villa. The Pope (a bunch of them) used Avignon as a summer and winter retreat. Once back at the estate, with my poor french that is coming back to me, I went down to the cellar with Patrick, the father, to taste a bunch of barrel samples. This is wine not yet in bottles but still in the barrel. Then it was a over the top dinner with a French chef that is a friend of the family at the estate. The food was amazing, pictures below. They continued to break out old vintages of wine dating all the way back to 1952! Finally at 11pm we headed out into town to our hotel in the heart of Avignon. This is a walled city that is the Capital of the Cotes du Rhone. The Rhone river runs right through the city.

This morning we head back to Marseille for a quick 90 minute flight to Venice. We’ll then get picked up by two vans and head to our estate in Verona before heading up to Slovenia. Once there we’ll be with Aleks Simcic, my friend and winemaker buddy. That’s it, 8:15 am here now which is 12:15am back home. Hope all’s well, take care and God Bless. After a day of traveling, I landed in Marseille around 9:30 am. Jody and Luisa were on the plane with me from Frankfurt and when we landed, Greg was waiting for us. Turns out Jody’s and Greg’s bags were lost. After we messed around with that, we headed out for the 90 minute drive to Heyres. This lovely town is 30 minutes from St. Tropez on the French Riviera.

We settled in and had some lunch before heading out to La Londe to go shopping to get them both some clothes. Then it was soon 4:30 when we would meet up with our hosts. Turns out the Fabre Family goes way back a few generations as the most famous family of French Rose producers there is. Monsieur Fabre’s grandmother met Queen Victoria when she was a little girl as the Queen used to vacation in Southern France. This started a long friendship between the two family’s. They have a museum in their house (or mansion) with a case with a ton of the Queen’s jewels. It’s like a museum with a ton of security. There are also photos on the piano fo Prince Rainier and Prince Albert, Grace Kelly and other royalty from Monaco which is 30 minutes away. The home, which has been there for hundreds of years, also has this amazing garden. The whole place was like out of a movie.

After touring the home and gardens we all jumped in 4 black Audi’s and they then took us for a surprise. Monsieur Fabre had rented a private motor yacht to take us to this small island where there are no cars for a special dinner. Now everyone was super tired but we were off. We had a great time and great dinner with way too much food, all fresh and prepared just for us. The fresh seafood was amazing and we dined and drank (not me) until about 11pm! We finally took the boat back and were home by midnight. I slept for 7 hours and amd now getting ready to go. This morning we’re back with them before heading out to Auvignon to meet another estate, for yet another good time and I’m sure more food.

I need to bring the family here and of course our hosts want me to and are already making special plans for Lori and the boys. I slept for 7 hours and now need to get moving. After spending so much time in Italy, it’s great to be in France, which is a great Country with super friendly people. I do need to brush up on my french though! Take care, GB.
