A Year of Change

Sounds like a country song right? Well, in fact, it is. The point is how are you living your life? More on this later.

Yesterday Jag and I took off for Denver around 8:30 am in search of a suit for Prom. We first stopped at the mall and hit a few stores and finally ended up at Nordstrom where we managed to get him a Hugo Boss coat and a nice pair of pants and a white shirt. He picked out a tie and a pocket square in grey to match. All should be ready by next weekend. Hope it lasts more than 3 months but I doubt it. I won’t even go into the cost as it’d give you all a heart attack as it almost did me!

We also found Jag a new pair of jeans and a shirt he wanted and then stopped by a store where I get clothes as I had a pair of shoes on hold. His jeans are white with rips on them and look just like Balmain jeans from Paris which, are you ready for this, sell for $1500 a pair at stores like Neiman Marcus, Saks and Barney’s of New York! Now first off, $1500, are you kidding me? I don’t get the ripped jeans thing but then I’m sure my parents didn’t get the bell bottom look either. Anyhow we found the exact same jeans for a few hundred bucks at another store. Don’t get me wrong a couple hundred bucks is still a lot for jeans, especially ripped ones, but in fact, Lori’s and Jag’s non ripped jeans all cost about $180 now anyhow. Personally I get mine at the cowboy shop for a mere $35. So Jag saw these and really wanted them so I bought them, along with a faded jean shirt he could layer over his t-shirt, as that’s what dad’s do. The young clerk told Jag what a cool dad he had, ha. It must be the “in” look as the manager at my men’s store, which is very chic and high end, told Jag how great and cool he looked. Throw in picking up a package a Neiman Marcus for my Mom and exchanging Ty’s Casio watch and we ended up at my Mom’s by 2pm. We visited for 30 minutes and then headed up the hill. Jag fell asleep for the ride home and we arrived by about 4pm. I then bbq’d some steaks and ribs for dinner.

Meanwhile Lori went for a hike and her and Francesa happened upon a mother moose and her calf. Luckily they took a quick picture and backed away slowly without incident. They had a good two hour hike up Meadow Mountain and were done around noon. Then she started cleaning the house while Ty did some homework.

Now to the title of today’s post. Driving up I was listening to a country station on the radio and one song was Live Like You Were Dying. On the surface, people will say, “yea, I do”, but do you really? I don’t remember all the lyrics but they centered around doing things you never thought of doing because you found out you were soon dying. I know, I know, it’s a country song but anyhow, it went on about being a friend that a everyone would like to have as a friend, forgiving people for things you’d never consider forgiving them for, being a little nicer to everyone than you’ve ever been before and more. Hopefully you get the point. If you don’t, just think about the title. If you knew you were dying in let’s say a month or a year, how would you change the way you live? I’ll bet everyone of us would be a different person, right? And hopefully the person we would all become would be a better person than who we are now. Anyhow just something to think about as you never know what tomorrow will bring. I’ll try to find a happier country song for tomorrow!

Yesterday Lori had a steroid shot in her shoulder which seems to have cut her headache by at least half. Apparently she has a bunch of bone spurs and bursitis in her shoulder where she had surgery. Hopefully the shot of cortisone will fix things otherwise it could be back to the OR for her. In any case, we’re thankful for the relief, but she did warn me with a wink last night that there were a ton of steroids in the shot! (steroids tend to make one cranky!)

This morning she’s going on a hike with her friend while Jag and I head down to Denver to take advantage of the last day of Friends and Family at Neiman Marcus. This gives us a 25% discount and he needs at least a sport coat and probably pants, for prom on the 26th, and it ends today. With me traveling, this is the only day besides tomorrow that we can get him fixed up. Throw in the 25% discount and today’s the day. I called some tux rental places and no one has anything that’ll fit his long lean frame, ugh.

Last night we went to sushi for Lori’s birthday and then both boys stayed in town to go see Guardians of the Galaxy II at the movies. I guess it was good. I have some work to do over the weekend and both boys do too in their rooms. I’ll also take a stab at the house once we get back from Big D.

It’s supposed to be warm up here and really warm down in Denver, about time, right? It’s now 5:30am so I guess I’ll get moving, wish my gym opened at 6 but they don’t until 8 on the weekends. What’s up with that?  Have a great weekend, GB3.

I’m headed back to Denver today as I have a sales meeting from 1:10 until 1:25. Sure is a long way to go for 15 minutes but that’s how it works. Lori had a good birthday as the girls at work got her flowers and she received lots of well wishes. We had cake which was a real treat but it sure was rich. Today Jag has an ortho appointment around 3:30 and I think Lori might have to take him as I don’t know if I can get back up here in time. Tomorrow she’s going on a hike with a friend at 10am and I’m determined to get things cleaned up around here. The house is so dusty in some places like under the beds and dressers and on top of anything that’s above eye level. Sounds like a fun weekend huh.

We think Lori’s head and neck are getting a little better. She thinks it has something to do with her shoulder so she’s getting an injection to see if that helps. Things are starting to get busy around here. Next week I’m off to Seattle and then to Europe the following week. Then before we know it, it’ll be June. It’s 6am now so I’d better get moving. It’s Cinco de Mayo which is Mexican Independence Day which basically means lots of beer and tequila and drunk people. Not really our cup of tea anymore.

Glad it’s Friday and we have a couple days off. Time to run so I can get the boys moving. Oh, Jag scored 95 out of 100 on the college entrance exams in English comprehension and structure and 93 out of 100 on something else. Next Tuesday he’ll take one more to see if he can get into DE (dual enrollment) in Math too. Have a good weekend. GBX3

Today is Lori’s birthday, whoo hoo. We have a busy day around here. I’m off to Denver, Jag has college exams at 6pm, Lori has two meetings and Ty has school. It’s nice up here befitting Lori’s birthday. She really doesn’t want to eat any cake but the boys insisted I get one so I ordered up her favorite gluten free cake from a great bakery in Denver. We had Chinese food last night and I shouldn’t have eaten it but boy was it good. Even though I was at the gym yesterday, I probably still gained a few pounds.

I need to leave in an hour so I’d better get moving. Lori’s car gets dropped off first and then it’s across town to the distributor, then to the mall, then to Arvada and then Golden and then up the hill. I need to get back up by 3 to get the boys. I think we’re going to dinner tomorrow night since Jag has tests at 6pm tonight. In any case, Happy Birthday Lori!

GB,GB, GB

I’m not sure what time the concert ended or exactly when Jag made it home, all we know is he’s home safe. The mom’s of the other 3 boys were texting back and forth all night so I was getting updates. Looks like it was fun and I think for the most part, the weather held out. We did see one picture and it looked pretty fun. Today at school is a half day known as the Day of the Arts. Not sure what that means but at least it’s a half day. We were supposed to get Lori’s windshield fixed yesterday but the rain postponed that until next Monday.

Lori wants to go to Moab this weekend which is 3 hours away. It’ll be in the high 80’s or 90’s there. Lots of flooding in the midwest on the news. We’ll see what the boys want to do. Maybe her and I will go alone. Her birthday is tomorrow, whoo hoo. Not sure what we’re doing, probably not much as she has a meeting and Jag has college assessment tests at 6pm. We need to make some changes around here including some massive de-cluttering and purging, especially in the basement. It’s hard living in such a small place. You see those tiny houses on tv on the show Tiny Houses, and although it looks cool, we honestly don’t know how people do it. We just need to get smarter about how we use our space. When I get back from Europe, we’ll make it a priority to reorganize around here.

It’s 5;22 and Lori and I are going to the gym in 30 minutes. Hope everyone is doing well. I think Grandma Dixie is going to Oklahoma for about a month around Memorial Day, back home to where she grew up. We’ll keep you posted but that should be fun for her. Have a great day, GB.

Tonight Jag will be at Red Rocks for the Chance concert. Chance is some rap artist that I don’t really know. Four boys are going along with the dad of one of them. Fred, the dad, is a good guy as it takes a lot to go to this show. I’m sure my parents felt the same way about the music when I was a kid. They should all get home between midnight and 1am.

Ty has a big Science test today which he’s been studying for. Lori needs to be at work by 7am for a Town Hall meeting and I have about a dozen States to call today. Today there’s supposed to be on and off showers and then the big warm up will be coming. I hope to be in Denver tomorrow but it might be Thursday. We’re getting the windshield fixed today on Lori’s car as a big rock smashed it on Friday. There’s always lots of rocks on the road this time of year as they’re left over from all the snow and snow plows. It’s almost 6am so I should get moving. Here it is, hard to believe, May 1st. Time to get moving as we overslept. On top of that, our email is down. It appears to be a Company thing as our internet is fine. That doesn’t help things. It shows how dependent we are on electronics and computers when my whole morning is upside down without email. It’s a wonder we accomplished anything before the internet, hmm. What’s sad is our kids never knew life before email, the internet or cell phones. Life was different then and some, including me, would argue it was better. Nothing we can do about it now though, you need to adapt and keep moving forward with the times. My Mom and I were talking about this very thing the other day. We as a society have advanced so far technologically, which is further than our capacity to handle it. Someday this is really going to come to a head and be a problem. Most people don’t even understand the capability some powers have to manipulate our thinking and basically, our entire way of life, all with technology. Just as an example, everything any of us writes on the internet, says on the phone, or where we go in our cars, (unless your car was made 30 plus years ago) is monitored and logged in some computer or cyber space. Everything you buy at a store, especially if you use anything but cash, is also tracked. Things you say in your own home, not on the phone, are also tracked as everything from your tv to your refrigerator or microwave, and especially your computer, have the ability to monitor you without you even knowing it. So, welcome the Big Brother. This is George Orwell’s 1984 a few decades late. The sad thing is this is all done in the name of protecting us or somehow being good for us. Look, any time the govt. says they’re doing something because it’s good for you, you’d better look out. I’m sure the founders of our Country and authors of our Constitution are rolling over in their graves. Oh well, it’s the World we now live in, sorry for the rant.

Today Jag has two baseball games, Ty a bunch of work, along with Lori and I too. It’s pretty outside and will warm up this week. Lori’s birthday is Thursday!  She’ll be 53, whoo hoo! Looks like we’re cancelling Hawaii reluctantly, even though I have a winemaker coming over from Slovenia. Kristin from Oregon will also go and handle things.

I think we had our last snowstorm until this fall but you never know. Yesterday it was warmer with no snow or rain but still cool. We drove down to Eagle and looked at a place where Grandma Dixie could move. They just opened a new adult retirement center (new is always good!) and Eagle is about 1500 feet lower in elevation than here. It’s really nice and is basically a new apartment building with all kinds of upgrades. I guess her doctor said she could try coming to Denver, and should be fine, as long as she brings her oxygen. Eagle is about the same elevation as Denver. It’d be nice for her and us if we could somehow get her to move out here as then she’d be closer to the boys. In any case, we need to get her out here for a visit and see how she does.

It’s now 7:15 and no one, meaning the boys, are moving. Time to go, have a great first week of May. I always liked May as it’s the gateway to summer. The snow melts, the rivers fill up and the trees, shrubs and flowers all burst with colors. We like summer much more than winter, ha! GB, which Tom reminded me, also stands for Green Bay too!

Yesterday after watching most of the draft and running some errands, I headed out to Denver to pick up Ty from his sleepover birthday party. The weather wasn’t too bad until I was about 20 minutes outside of Denver as that’s where I found the snow. The roads were slushy but not really too slick. The snow was wet and heavy and trees everywhere were bent over to the point of breaking. It took me about an hour and 15 minutes to get down to Tom and Ali’s as Ty had walked down there after the party to wait for me. Ty was tired and slept most of the way back up the hill. After a quick stop at the grocery store in Frisco, we pulled in right before 7pm. Jag meanwhile was at Ethan’s with a couple of buddy’s and they all spent the night. He’ll get dropped off this morning around 8:30 as Zach has to go to Denver for soccer.

We’re leaning towards postponing our Hawaii trip. There’s all kinds of reasons such as I’m in Europe the two weeks before, plus the cost. You don’t realize how much it costs as things like boarding Mojo and food and meals add up. Even though we have our tickets, it’ll still cost a few thousand dollars for a place to stay plus the rental car. If we do stay home, we are doing something, camping, going to Yellowstone or Mt. Rushmore or something to kick off the summer. Ty goes to camp on July 2nd and Jag I think is going to Washington D.C. with Zach for a week to stay with Harmon (their friend who used to live here) and then Harmon will fly back with them and stay here for a week. I think they’re going the last week of June.

It’s sunny outside with a bright blue sky filled with small patches of white. We need to purge some more stuff today and take some winter gear down to the storage unit. There’s always something to do around here.

I talked with my Mom on the phone the whole way down to pick up Ty yesterday. She occupied my drive and helped me pass the time. We reminisced about fishing and spending time in the mountains 17 years ago when Lori and I first came back to Colorado. I have a picture of Lori, with her short hair, and Mom, with a scarf around her hair and in a jean jacket, in the kitchen at Archie Hess’s old cabin cleaning fish we just caught at the ranch, for dinner. We were talking about how much dad loved the ranch and even though he never said much, you could tell, that’s where he was most happy. For me, it’s pretty much the same feeling. I’ve taken over his dream of having a small cabin up there with a wrap around porch. Like Robi said a week ago, you don’t regret the things you did in life, just those you didn’t. Maybe this is the year I’ll at least stake a place out or clear some timber. You have to start somewhere, right? We’ll see. I’m not getting any younger!

Jag has two baseball games tomorrow in Rifle and then a concert at Red Rocks Tuesday night. A week from Wednesday I fly out to Seattle and tw0 weeks from Tuesday, am off to France and a few other countries until the 25th. So, we’re busy, and school ends May 26th! They say it will be in the 80’s by the end of the week which is welcome news. I think we’ve seen the last of the white stuff for the year but you never know.

Guess I’ll run so I can grab a second cup of coffee and get ready to head to the gym. Have a nice last day of April as tomorrow is May 1st! GB, which has two meanings, Go Broncos and God Bless!

Sorry we’re so late today, Lori and I went to the gym and then I had to get on the phone and interview a guy I hope to hire in Texas. Then the draft was on and I was all sucked in and the day got away from me. Tommy just reminded me that I didn’t do it, ha.

Ty is still in Denver and Jag is at Zach’s. I’m not sure if I’m going to get Ty later today or tomorrow morning. Jag is going to Ethan’s tonight as it’s his birthday. Lori went to get her nails done and as I said, I’m watching the draft.

The NFL Draft started at 6pm and while we waited until about 9 for the Broncos to pick, it was still fun. In the end, Denver took an offensive lineman which wasn’t the sexiest pick but probably the right one. Today, or tonight, Rounds 2 and 3 start at 5pm. I think we have 3 or 4 picks. My brother and i text each other back and forth hoping for guys we end up passing on. Oh well, like I said, it’s fun.

This morning I’m taking Ty down to Denver to stay at Ben’s until tomorrow night as it’s Ben’s birthday. Apparently we have a good snowstorm headed our way this afternoon so I hope to be back up by 2 or so. Then I’ll try to get down tomorrow to pick him up. If it’s too bad, he can stay until Sunday. I’ll be making chili tonight.

Lori’s neck and head are doing better, thankfully. Hard to believe it’ll be May on Monday. Jag’s games were rescheduled to Monday in Rifle which is a drag as they were home games but are now 90 minutes west on the highway. Tonight after practice, one of the boys Mom’s is cooking dinner for the whole team. This means Jag will get home around 8pm and Lori will have to pick him up as it’ll be smack dab in the middle of the draft!

Lori and I are headed to the gym so time to go. It’s 5:23am right now and Mojo is hungry! Have a great weekend, take car, Go Broncos and God Bless.
