A Year of Change

We landed safely at 7:30 am or 11:30pm Denver time. By the time we made it through Passport Control and picked up our rental car, it was about 9am. 3 hours later we were in front of the pool at our hotel 2 blocks from the beach. We lasted about 30 minutes before all heading upstairs to our rooms for a nap. It’s now 5;30pm here in Italy and we just showered and will be heading out for dinner soon.

I think we all slept about 3 or 4 hours as we didn’t sleep much on the plane. Antonio has orderd up two special fresh fish, that were caught today and weigh about 2 kilos each. That means about 4.4 pounds per fish. We’ll walk down to the marina where he has his boat and then go to dinner. I was tired driving but not “fall asleep tired”, just eye burning tired..

Tomorrow we’re off on Antonio’s boat to the Island of Elba. Time to run, more to come tomorrow. Hope all’s well, GB

We pulled into the airport at 9:20 am to check in for our 11:20 flight. Everything seemed fine as we were right on time. But wait, when we went to check in, the boys passports were not accepted! It turns out that their passports, which expire on September 16th, were not valid for travel to Italy. There’s a new rule where they cannot expire within 6 months of your travel dates. Now we had no clue about this, the airlines never told us and were shocked. After managing to change our flights to today, we were off to gather all the needed forms, pictures, social security numbers and birth certificates needed to try to get them new passports in 4 hours. Thankfully James, who was driving our car after dropping us off, wasn’t too far from the airport when Lori called him.

After a few phone calls, we managed to get an appointment across town at noon. Initially they told us they had no appointments left today but I hung up, called back and got another agent who squeezed us in. First though we had to gather the aforementioned documents. Just about everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Construction on the roads, birth certificates in Vail and more. Not to be deterred, I was more determined to get this done with every roadblock. The first step was getting all the needed stuff and making it to the passport agency (there’s only 1 in Denver) by noon. We actually made it by about 11:30 and then the wait began. Apparently we were not the first ones this had happened to. The agents were sympathetic and helped us as fast as they could but we still sat until 2:20 until they were ready. There were a few hiccups in the 3 hours but it’d take too long to explain. Jag kept asking if for sure now we were going to Italy and I told him, “not until I have your new passports in my hand will I feel good about it”. Once they handed them over it was off to my Mom’s. We arrived there 30 minutes later and I threw in a load of laundry. I think a pair of white Polo boxer shorts are still stuck to the inside of her washing machine!

We were going to stay at her house and our friends who are flying tomorrow to meet us in Italy also offered us to stay at their house, but in the end, through a connection Lori has, we checked into the ultra chic, brand new, Westin that is connected directly to the airport terminal. In fact, I’m writing this right now from my room while the kids are on the 11th floor at the pool. Our flight was at 11:20 out of Denver again but since we lost 1st Class from Denver to Dulles, we moved up to the 8:05am flight with our friends Jeff and Tina. We’ll then hang out in D.C. for 3 hours until our 5:30pm flight to Rome. Thankfully, somehow, they still have us in 1st Class to Rome. It would have been hell to fly 8 and 1/2 hours in coach.

So that’s it, Uncle Tom made us some good food and brought it up to Grandma’s. I’m checking emails, the kids are swimming and the sun is setting over the Rocky Mountains to the west. Next time you read this, we’ll hopefully be writing from Italy. Take care and God Bless.

Yesterday my Mom along with Tommy and James found a new puppy in Oklahoma that will be joining the family this Saturday. Her name is Maybell! She’s a Bichon just like Popcorn and looks similar too. We saw pictures on James’s phone yesterday afternoon. We’re glad as my Mom needs someone around the house.

It took us almost 3 hours to drive down from Vail yesterday as the traffic was not good. We made it to our hotel around 4pm and then grabbed some food to take over to Grandma’s. Afterwards, Vinny came over to the hotel to swim with Ty until 9:30. I’ll bet he slept well.

This morning we’ll leave here around 8am and go to my Mom’s where James will ride with us to the airport and then drive our car back to my Mom’s to save us from parking there for 2 weeks. Our first flight is at 11:20 and it’ll be about midnight Denver time tonight when we land in Rome. So, here we go, time to get moving, hope all’s well, take care and GB.

This morning we need to take Mojo to daycare. He just peed in Ty’s room even though the door was open for him to go outside. We think he’s mad as he knows we’re packing. He certainly knows he peed and that he shouldn’t have as when Lori called him, he ran to hide with his head down and tail between his legs. I can’t believe it as I just had the carpet cleaners out here again last week. Unbelievable.

On top of that, we need to finish packing and Lori has a spray tan appointment around 10. James should be on the way and I’ll meet him in Eagle and then cancel our storage unit in Denver which is $240 a month. It actually ended up costing us more to have him bring our stuff up here than it did to get it all out of our house in Denver when we moved. Oh well, it is what it is.

We’re getting excited and looking forward to Italy. You almost need a vacation before your vacation just to get ready to go. From our work to the house to packing to all the details, paperwork wise, it’s a lot. Just coordinating all the travel these days, hotels, rental cars, reservations at various places, etc. is a lot. I’m pretty good at it though and think I have everything covered.

This afternoon we’ll see my Mom who I’m sure is missing Popcorn. If you missed the post yesterday, she had to put her down around noon. Again, it was the right thing to do but that doesn’t make it any easier. Robin and I were talking as we both recently went through the same thing, her with Sunny and us with Lacey. Our pets aren’t just pets, they’re family and we miss them lots.

James called and he is passing Vail right now, so I have to cut this short to meet him in Eagle.

Well I forgot to write the blog this morning, (obviously as it’s 7:48pm!) but in my defense, we’re super busy. I remembered this morning around 11 but then was sidetracked which distracted me, and thus, I forgot again!

Anyhow, we’re packing and rushing around getting ready to go to Denver tomorrow. Monday morning we’ll fly out. We’re staying in a Marriott near my Mom’s tomorrow night and James will drive us to the airport Monday morning. Tomorrow morning, or today if you’re reading this Sunday am, James is driving up the remainder of our “stuff” that was in storage in Denver. Then we’ll all head down.

Now to some sad news, my Mom had to put her beloved dog Popcorn to sleep today. I know how tough this is but she did the right thing as the poor little dog was suffering. I still remember the day we were in a mall in Scottsdale Arizona when my Mom and Dad made Popcorn a part of the family. She was a loyal companion and friend for my Mom and Dad and will be sadly missed.

So, time to go, lots still to do and we’re running out of time. We did find out we were upgraded to First Class today, whoo hoo! That’ll make the trip over much more enjoyable.

I’m sure you all saw the news yesterday where there was another horrific attack on innocent people in France. These were people celebrating their Independence Day when they were run over by a radical terrorist in a truck and then sprayed with gunfire. By the way, guns are 100% illegal in France but that didn’t stop it. It’s time to face it, we are at war and it’s time for Congress to say so and get Nato involved. Turns out Trump agrees while Hillary and O want to bring in more refugees. In fact, Obama is speeding up his importation of refugees, none of which are vetted. I don’t have a problem with refugees as long as you make sure they are not terrorists. Make sense, doesn’t it?

Anyhow last night we rushed to the gala at the jet center in Eagle as Lori was late getting home due to traffic. They took a huge private jet hanger and turned it into a giant ballroom. The theme was sort of like Dancing With the Stars as they had  8 well known locals dance with professional dancers from the show. It was pretty entertaining. I sat next to Dr. Steadman of the Steadman Clinic and we had a fun time. He came here from Lake Tahoe in 1968 to start the now World famous Steadman Clinic where Lori works. It was eerie how much he was like my dad and his wife was like my Mom. It was like some alternate universe as their mannerisms were almost identical. The event raised over $500,000 with people bidding up to $127,000 for a private jet package to the Masters Golf Tournament. Most things sold for $20,000 or so. Obviously we didn’t bid on anything!

I need to ship some wine today and then head back to the gym. I was there twice yesterday for separate workouts and am down two pounds. I’ll go twice today and tomorrow before we leave as there’s no gym, that I know of, in Italy. We’ll do lots of walking and push ups.

Last night Warner spent the night here. That’s the third night in a row which is ok as when we leave Sunday for Denver, that’ll be the last time Ty sees Warner as they move August 1st back to Maryland. Wonder if he’ll be here again tonight?

Guess I’ll head to the gym, hope all’s well, take care, and be safe. Unfortunately what happened overseas is coming to a neighborhood near you, it’s just a matter of time. God Bless.

It seems we just celebrated Bastille Day but alas, that was a year ago! Tonight Lori and I are going to some $10,000 per table event with 4 other couples. I just found out about this a few days ago. It seems The Steadman Clinic bought a table and we need to show. I guess it’s us, Dr. and Mrs. Steadman, Dr. C and Kim (Lori’s doc), another doc from the clinic’s wife and their daughter and their neighbors. The other doc who is the other half of the Steadman Phillipon Research Institute is in surgery. Anyhow it’s at the private jet center at the airport in Eagle and is some sort of take off (nice pun huh) on Dancing With the Stars. It starts at 5 so hopefully it’ll be done by 9 at the latest.

I made it to Denver to get my wine and was back up here by noon. Lori left to go down to her eye appointment at 3 and stopped to see my Mom. Her eyes are doing well, yea! Ty went swimming with Warner and spent the night at his house and Jag and I went to his two basketball games at 5 and 6pm. Then I had my men’s bible study call at 8pm and was done about 9:30. It’s not so much a bible study as it is a study of discipleship. Anyhow I’m part of this every few weeks. It’s normally weekly but it the summer is more difficult to stay on schedule as everyone has things going. It includes guys from a number of different States but is a good thing. It keeps me grounded. Anyhow Lori and obviously Jag are still sleeping.

Lots to do still to get ready to go. Hopefully we’ll have everything done before we leave and if we don’t, well, life goes on. Guess I’ll head to the gym. Lori just came down and has clinic today so she leaves around 8. Have a great day and God Bless.

Ok, my wine is ready. It cleared last night so this morning I’m off to pick it up. It’s 5am now and I’ll be on the road by 6 and at the airport in Denver by 8am, depending on traffic. Lori just said, “oh man, I love sleep, but it doesn’t seem like we get enough”. That is pretty much true!

She has to be at work at 7 and then has to drive to Denver for a 4:30 eye appointment. The boys of course will stay home. We’re getting ready a little bit every day for our trip. Lots to do to leave for 2 weeks. The list is long. Hopefully I won’t forget anything. I did talk to one of my long time friends and winemakers who lives in Ancona. We’ll go over to his place for a night and go out on a big boat in the Adriatic Sea. You can actually see Greece from his place. I think he’s also taking us to Assisi where of course, Francis of Assisi, the famous Saint is from. So the trip is shaping up to be quite the adventure, more to come. But now, time to shower and hit the road. GB

Well, our wine didn’t clear customs yesterday so I’m hoping for today. This is just getting ridiculous. I’m running out of time. I just texted our customs broker but haven’t heard anything yet. Whoops, just received a text, nothing yet.

Yesterday the boys hung around the house. Ty and Warner did go see the new Tarzan movie in the afternoon while Jag took a 11 kilometer hike. Lori has clinic and I have lots of paperwork to do. I also need to get to the gym so time to run. Here’s a fun picture which apparently is true. That’s why it’s so funny!  God Bless

Well today our wine better clear customs. it could all be trash by now with the heat that’s been in Denver. Let’s hope not. The big event of the day yesterday was the truck full with most of our stuff from Denver coming up from our storage unit down in Denver to our storage unit up here. James and his friend Larry drove up after loading as much as they could. There’s still one small load to come up this weekend. I helped them unload it and then bought them some bbq for lunch before they headed back to Denver.

Both boys were in town with Ty going to a movie with 3 friends and Jag going to Emiel’s. Emiel is in summer school as he skis competitively and misses a lot of days in the fall so he and other skiers have school in the summer. Jag had dinner with them before I picked him up at 8pm.

Lori and I took Mojo for a hike in the morning before heading down valley for some errands. It was over 100 in Denver and 88 up here. When I go to Denver today I’ll take Ty’s friend Jack home. Jack’s been with us since last Wednesday, time for him to go!

Time to run as Lori and I are headed to the gym. Italy in a week, whoo hoo! Anyone have any Euro’s? GB
