A Year of Change

To start, the above stands for Thank God it’s Freakin Friday! I threw in “freakin” (toned it down for you all) as we need a weekend bad. It’s still hard to believe we’re in August already. Get ready, soon Tom will be getting out his Christmas tree!

Yesterday I had lunch with my good life long friend Harry who is here for a couple weeks doing some work to make some money. I guess all the work has dried up in California. We’ll get him up here to do a few things like drywall repair and other carpentry things. It was good to see him.

We managed to get Lori in for a massage after work to try to help her head. Today she’s getting some trigger point injections to hopefully tome it down too. No comments on the Steve Jobs post yesterday? Tom and I did text about it but I don’t see anything from the rest of you. I told Tom as we get older we get wiser and when one is facing death, I imagine you get really smart as to what’s really important in life. Tom and I agreed we want to get wiser through old age and not the latter.

Ty goes to work with Deb again this morning and Jag has a dentist appointment. I’m off to a meeting in Longmont and will hopefully be home by 3, depending on traffic. The Broncos won, whoo hoo! have a great day, be safe and God Bless.

Today is the start of the end of summer, wow. School starts this month, I go hunting and soon it will be September with the leaves changing, hard to believe. It was a short summer for sure. Heck, football even starts tonight with the bronco’s playing the Falcon’s in pre-season.

Yesterday I met a woman and her kids at Mom’s through a buddy of mine that it looks like will be buying the piano on Saturday. I showed her the piano around noon after I met my buddy Art around 10 in Cherry Creek who called them to see if anyone was interested. They want an invoice (?) so I’ll have to dummy one up. She said it’s cracked underneath and wants to have the warranty transferred. I should spiff my buddy (I offered) but he said that’s ok. Each of us kids should get $500 or so. We’re buying a guitar with our share as the boys have been playing and this way we have something from Mom’s piano.

James and I also cleaned out more stuff from the garage and basement. There’s all that old liquor in the small closet down there that has to be cleaned out. Also the shed behind the garage still has stuff in it and there’s still furniture in Robi’s old room. It was sort of surreal being in the empty house all alone where we all grew up. In the end though, it’s just a house. What made it a home was all of us being there and all the fun times we had growing up. Still though, sort of sad to see it go.

Thinking about life and such, I came across this post from Steve Jobs that’s worth a read, check it out.

Guess that’s the way life works but I think we’d all be better off if we could take away something from the above words. Mom used to say “things are just things”. As is said above, as we get older, we get smarter, hopefully!

This morning I need to be in Idaho Springs for training at the range at 8 am. Then down in Denver to meet a buddy at 10 and then out to Mom’s at 11:30 to meet James. We need to get the rest of the things out of the house as we’re running out of time. I think I have the piano gone at $2500. This is super cheap but these days you can’t give a piano away. We’d like to keep it but it’d cost us over $3000 to move it and store it until the house is done, so no way.

Lori and I went to the movies last night. Earlier in the day I went to Aspen with Ty and Jag had fun at Water World. August 1st tomorrow, hard to believe. I briefly talked to Dixie the other day and we talked about getting her out here for a visit as it’s so hard to get all four of us there, we’ll see. Maybe Lori can fly out and get her. Time to run as I need to leave in 23 minutes, God Bless.

Today they say it’ll be a hot one, especially down the hill. Up here we’ll probably see the mid 80’s which is just about perfect. We made a few changes to the house yesterday. We decided to take out the sliding glass door in the living room and add a sliding glass wall! We’re also putting one in our bedroom. I hate those sliding doors. We spent last night researching everything from our pizza oven to kitchen cabinets and more. Lori, of course, is picking most of the stuff. I get to choose things for my office and the vault downstairs, ha.

Ty went to town as Jack came up to stay with Sonny. Then all three of them spent the night at Sonny’s. Jag is off to Denver to go to Water World with three friends. Tyler is driving them, hope she’s a good driver. Lori and I are going to see the new movie tonight Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. We were going to go last night but it was sold out.

Today Lori has clinic. Every day is a shit show at work with some, as Lori calls them, crazy ass patients that are usually too entitled for their own good. I’m off to Carbondale and Aspen today for a quick meeting. At 4 we have the exterminator coming although all our flies are gone. I’m still having them check things out as it’s been so wet this year that there’s a lot more bugs plus the neighbor had a mouse! He had his sliding door open for a few hours though so he thinks it came in that way.

Mojo pooped in the house, ugh, so I’d better take them up the hill now. Guess I should have taken him up the hill before he pooped! Have a great day, God Bless.

3 days left in July and lots to do. The boys and I have some cleaning, studying and getting ready for school stuff to do, Lori’s back at work and I have about $500K worth of orders to get in by Wednesday night. I also need to get with Tom and get the piano out of the house. Guess I’d better call a piano mover today. Throw in fasting all week or as much as I can (as we ate too much in Aspen!) and we’ve got our work cut out for us. There’s a chill in the air this morning. Hope Fall isn’t on the way already.

We stopped by the house and it’s coming along. Framing should be starting soon. We have so much to do meaning picking out things from floors to fixtures to paint, and tons of other stuff. We stopped by and saw Rollie and Dave’s new house yesterday which needs a ton of work. Dave bought it for $6.2 Million and it has 8 acres up against Buttermilk Ski Area in Aspen so that’s a huge deal. Neighboring homes are in the $20 to $30 Million dollar range. An old Italian Jewish couple owned it so has burgundy colored carpets, gold fixtures and pink walls which all have to go. It might take longer than building from scratch like we are. Great location though just a few minutes from downtown Aspen.

Next up we stopped for lunch in Basalt and then the boys played frisbee in the park while Lori and I ran into Whole Foods. When we came back the frisbee was on top of some shed in the park. Jag had to stand on my shoulders and use a long tree branch to knock it down. Luckily we managed to save our $1.99 frisbee at the expense of my shoulders, ha.

We were home by 2 or so and both boys took off to hook up with friends. Jag was with Lexi and Émile until around 10:30 and Ty went to town and then a movie until 10. The dogs come home today too. Looks like our flies are all gone, thankfully. That’s it, here’s some house pictures. Hard to see the layout from these unless you know what it is but this is the foundation. Lots of homes don’t have a basement these days but we wanted one for sure. God Bless.

We were up on time and headed out around 10 for our party. We met up with our friends at a spot on the road so they could follow us up the hill. 30 minutes and about 5000 feet in elevation later, we were at the party.

The views were spectacular, the food and friends great and the music couldn’t have been better. Lori wanted to dance and we ended up dancing for an hour or so. We had one little downpour that lasted only 15 minutes or so. Some people were cold a bit but what do you expect at 13,000 feet in the Rockies.

At 3 we headed down the hill with a few friends who needed a ride and went to Ward’s hat shop. It’s so funky and cool and everyone wanted some kind of custom hat. We hung out and continued the party there until about 5:30 when we separated to get ready for dinner at 8:15. Ward is this cool country boy from Mississippi and after Jeff asked “so, you’re a friend of Doug’s”, Ward said, “no Doug’s my best friend!” Ha, how nice.

At 8 we walked the three blocks to meet up with everyone again for dinner. There were 11 of us and we had a Tatami Room at Kenichi. Dinner was unbelievable and over the top. In the Tatami room you can hook you phone up to a jack to play your own music so that was cool too! About 3 hours later we were done and all said our good nights and headed home. It was a really nice fun day and evening. Today we’re loading up and then heading up to Rollie and Dave’s house to see it around 10. Then we’re supposed to hit a party/brunch at 11 at Billie and Greg’s before heading home.

Fun news is Schultz and Jane who are long time friends of us and Jeff and Tina, decided to look at getting a place in Spain above Barcelona and after talking, looks like we’ll all go in together. They’ve gone there a few times a year for the past 10 years and you can get a cool 4 bedroom place with pool and more for $500K. Between three of us that’s less per year than one trip to Hawaii! We’ll see what happens but everyone seems to be in. Here’s some pictures, enjoy and God Bless.

Yesterday was fun. We walked, shopped, dined, visited and laughed. Today will be more of the same in some fashion or another. Our party starts at 11 and goes until 3. We’ll head out around 10:15 from our place. Meanwhile the boys and Sam (Dr. C’s daughter and the boys friend) will do the town and maybe go swimming. The farmers market is going on today about 2 blocks from our home away from home.

Yesterday we went back to Bobby’s for a visit around 4. Bobby and Mike, both big Baylor alumni, were pitching Jag on the merits of the school. We’re going down in September probably for a football game to visit. They are committed to doing any and everything to help Jag and Ty out. I guess Patty’s family just donated $40 Million to the school. Earlier we stopped by to see my buddy who own the hat company. Ward gave Lori this awesome hat and told her in his words, “to rock it as only she can”. I posted pictures below as it’s super cool adorned with a rifle slug and more. It’s all distressed and as you’ll see has falcon talons burned inside it chasing a mouse or something. They went down to the river and found imprints of the falcon in the sand and traced them somehow. They do unique things like the string on top to hold your smokes or whatever, fun. The hat band is made on a Japanese loom from the 1800’s! We’re dialed in as Ward doesn’t charge us but people pay $1000 or more and wait 4 months or so for one of their hats! I love how this one is all weathered. It’s really cool in person and as Ward says, Lori rocks it like only she can. He’s designing her a new hat too but said this one was calling out her name until hers is done When you see it on Lori, you’ll know what he means.

At 7 we met up with Schultz and Jane for dinner at Jimmy’s. It was a great time with good food and fun company. We all came back to our place after dinner to hang out before they left and we went to bed around 10.

The weather looks good, clear and sunny. That can change in a matter of minutes up here though so you have to be ready. Tonight 13 of us are having sushi at Kenichi at 8. This gives us a few hours between the party and dinner. Our friends Jeff and Tina just texted they’re driving through Vail on the way up as they had a concert last night in Denver. Time to cowboy up!

After a long busy day, we finally left Vail around 6 pm for Aspen. This wasn’t good as we were supposed to be at our Italian Garden Party at 6! Long story short, Lori couldn’t get out of work. Oh well, we decided we’d stop by in the next day or two.

We pulled into Aspen and found our place right away. It’s nice and within walking distance of everything in town, and it’s free! We took off right away for dinner and walked into Clarks. They’re booked weeks or longer in advance but we lucked out as they had a cancellation right when we walked in. We had a nice dinner and finished around 9. The boys then walked back to our condo and Lori and I headed to the Silver City Saloon where some kids (in their 30’s) were having their record release party. Ward our friend greeted us and had a table reserved for us. Soon the band started with Chris playing with a couple of guys from the Wallflowers. We stayed for about 3 or 4 songs and then headed out. We decided to hit City Market for food and supplies. When we were leaving, our friend Bobby, who hosts the garden party, texted and said to please come over to say hi. Reluctantly, we headed that way.

As soon as I turned right on to the road to their place, Lori yelled “bear”! Sure enough, right in front of us was a huge bear walking across the road. Lori said “stop” so I did and we watched him walk up to the door of a house and try the handle! We watched him for a while and Lori took a few pictures and then we headed to Bobby’s.

When we arrived there were about a dozen people around the table out back. Now Bobby and Patty are really wealthy but I think Patty’s cousin who was there owns the famous King Ranch in Texas. Patty gave a speech and then Bobby chimed in saying how Lori saved his life. He was kind to then say that I too was such a big part of helping him get well as we drove over a number of times during his recovery. Patty tearfully told the whole group we were their angels. Very nice and sort of embaressing.

Soon some people including Patty’s 90 year old mother from Dallas went inside and Bobby and his best friend Mike, who we also know, were all over getting Jagger to visit and go to Baylor where they both went and were baseball coaches. Bobby asked me what it’d take and I jokingly said for him to pay the tuition to which Bobby said “we can probably work something out”. This isn’t as far fetched as you might think as like I said, they’re really well off. Lori was admiring the hydrangeas and we found out Patty just spent $65,000 flying them in! Who are these people? Honestly they’re super nice, down to earth, regular folks. Well to be fair, Patty is a bit over the top. At 11;30 we left but he made us promise to bring the boys by tomorrow at 4 so we’ll be back.

Tonight at 6 we have our friends annual Italian Garden Party. Bobby and Patty as you might remember are from Texas. It’s lots of fun with a diverse crowd from all over. Then at 9 there’s an album release party at the Silver City Saloon for our friends that own Aspen Hatters. Chris the owner has a band and this is their first album. Willie Nelson’s kid Lukas, who has his own band and a couple guys from the Wallflowers are playing with them. My buddy Ward texted he has a table reserved for us so we have to show.

Tomorrow a lot of our friends show up from Denver and we have dinner at 8 and then the Aspen Blow Party Saturday. Should be a fun weekend.

Our friends Gerry and Marcy won’t be coming as he was in a bike accident and is down in Denver with a small brain bleed, 3 broken fingers, a busted nose and 6 or 7 fractured ribs! He seems to be doing fine but won’t be coming to Aspen as planned for the party. Marcy and Lori are texting back and forth multiple times each day.

Ty had three cavities filled yesterday! He needs to lay off the sugar drinks like juice and tea’s and others. I threw out a ton of stuff yesterday and we donated a lot of food to the Salvation Army. Most of the food was from the basement as I’m one of those guys that has months if not years worth and rotate it from time to time.

Ty has Deb his tutor this morning and we’ll drop Harley at daycare on the way. Then we’ll take Mojo after that. We have Orkin coming Tuesday but I’ll probably have all the flies gone by then. I think whatever died in the wall, (a mouse?) is about gone.

That’s it, Jag is still mobile loving his new 4 wheel freedom. Tom and Ali had their anniversary yesterday, congrats, and I’m working away. Be safe and God Bless.

This morning Ty and I are off to the dentist. He has an 8 am appointment and I’ll go to the gym next door until he’s done. We’re still battling with flies. The exterminator thinks they’re attic flies as they’re slow and easy to catch, thankfully. There are a whole lot less than a couple days ago but I think I’ll still have Orkin out here if they can come today, ugh.

We’re donating a bunch of clothes and food today to the Salvation Army. So as soon as we get back we’ll be going through closets and boxing things up. Time to declutter and help some less fortunate people. Funny as Mom always said to declutter.

Everyone is doing well and we’re off to Aspen tomorrow. Ty and I need to leave at 7:30 so time to get moving. Hope all’s well, take care, be safe, and God Bless.
