A Year of Change

The above describes Ty but in case you didn’t know, it’s also the title of a big song from the 80’s by Slaughter. Anyhow as I said, Ty was up all night, just about every hour coughing. Finally around 4:30 am Lori made him some hot water, lemon and honey and he’s been sleeping since. I’ll bet he’ll sleep until at least after noon. He missed the past three days of school and has a really bad cold. Lori took him to the doctor a few days ago and they said he just needs to ride it out. Hope he’s better soon.

I went to Denver yesterday for work and while there bought both boys new computers. They needed them as theirs were on their last legs. I too had a new one show up from my company yesterday. I thought we’d lost the blog as we couldn’t log in except on our phones then magically it reappeared. Next week I’m going to start the huge job of printing it all out on paper so I don’t lose it!

Jag stayed at school until about 8 last night watching the girls volleyball game, smart man, ha. Tomorrow Lori and I are headed down for the Bronco game. We’re taking her good friend Brooke who used to work for her at the Plastic Surgery office in Denver. I’m glad she can go as Lori and her really have a lot of fun together. We’ll meet at Elway’s for our traditional pre-game brunch. I need to find my gift certificate from Robin from Christmas so we can use it, thanks again Robi and Robert.

Time to get moving so I can go to the gym. I’m off at 11 with my buddy back up to our hunting grounds to look at an off the grid cabin on 35 acres that borders national forest that a bunch of us guys might go in on. It’s pretty cheap but really nice and in the middle of nowhere, we’ll see. You can never go wrong owning more land as they just aren’t making any more, ha.

Tom texted me yesterday that I forgot to put in the blog that football started last night. Well, I forgot! It wasn’t much of a game, at least what I saw as I switched it off sometime after half time. Not sure who won. We were taking Ty and a friend this week but he’s too sick and behind on homework. So Lori and I will need to find someone to go with us. Shouldn’t be hard.

Jag went back to playing soccer last night. He had Lori ask Dr. Viola if he could play and he reluctantly said yes. Lori has the fireplace on this morning which is nice. Harley is laying on her bed in front of us and I think Mojo is behind the couch. The political ads have started and will run non stop until November 5th, not fun. The people that make these ads could make a serial killer look good. Don’t believe what you see on tv, just vote Republican, ha.

I missed my buddy’s dad’s funeral yesterday with Ty sick. We’d like him to go to school today but he has that deep cough and we heard it all night long. We’ll give him another 30 minutes before we wake him and see how he’s doing.

Soon it’ll be Halloween and then Thanksgiving and then Christmas. Just think, in 3 months it’ll be December 7th, what will you be doing then? Just a heads up, on Sunday it’ll be the one year anniversary of Mom passing. Tom and I decided it’s good it’s on a Sunday with football as Mom loved football. More to come in a couple days. Ty came home yesterday sick with a bad cough and cold. Lori had to leave work and pick him up and take him to the doctor. We all made it home just about the same time. He left a note outside his door saying he needed to stay home today but if he doesn’t have a fever, he needs to go. I’m supposed to go to a funeral at 11am in Denver but have a big conference call with Las Vegas that’s been set for a month. I’ve been trying to reschedule it but so far haven’t heard back. It’s also way down in Park Meadows so it’s a long drive. I’ll know more in an hour or so.

Tom sent pictures yesterday of a huge hail storm at his house. A mile away at 26th and Kipling the news on tv showed flooding and this morning they showed more hail 2 blocks from his house. We sure don’t miss that.

Shelly should be waking up in Augusta Georgia this morning which is her new home. Hope she enjoys it. She broke her elbow last weekend I guess tripping over a curb. Not sure if she’s having surgery or what.

I was in Denver yesterday and ended up having lunch with Tom and Tasha who is here to fly back with Shelly to Georgia today. It was a nice lunch where we talked about Mom and Dad, the ranch and things from when we were kids. I made it back up by about 1:30.

This morning Lori is going to workout with our trainer. I’d like to go but someone has to take the boys to school, ugh. It’s cool up here today which is nice. They say rain is in the forecast.

School is going well but Jag has lots of work every day as he signed up for three AP classes. I’m going to try to take a stab at the garage today but we’ll see as I have a lot of work. That’s about it, time to get the boys up. Have a great day and God Bless.

Yesterday was the unofficial last day of summer. You should have seen the traffic going to Denver. Lori and I went to Frisco around 9 am and when we left it was already backed up to there on I-70. For those of you not local, that’s a good 70 miles from Denver with traffic already moving around 5 or 10 miles an hour. Going west up Vail Pass that too was jam packed and we were thinking those poor people have no idea what they’re in for.

While Marty and I were hunting there was a bad hail storm in Vail and his wife was rear ended on I-70 on Saturday. He told her to go to the doctor but she didn’t. When we were at dinner Sunday night Lori made sure she understood to go to Urgent Care yesterday just to make sure she was ok. Around 4 yesterday afternoon we found out she has a blood clot in her neck! They were going to send her to Vail Health (our hospital) but they wouldn’t take her as they don’t have the people or equipment to handle her. I think she’s home right now but will probably end up in Denver today at a big hospital with a trauma center. They might have taken her down last night, we’re not sure. Lori says this is a big deal and people can have a stroke from this so lucky she went in. Lori also said lucky we went to dinner as a few glasses of wine also thins the blood which would have helped her. We’ll know more today but what a shock. Marty was lamenting the coming medical bills and I told him the other insurance company will pay for everything and if by chance his wife is on blood thinners the rest of her life, she’s looking at huge compensation. Of course everyone would prefer it didn’t happen. Just a reminder how quickly things can change.

Both boys have school and I’m off to Denver. Lori has clinic and Harley has daycare, so we’re all busy. I’ll be in Denver around 9 and hopefully back by 11 or so. It’s getting cool up here and I love it. Fall is my favorite season. I think I’m going deer hunting early November so I have that to look forward to but next up is the Bronco home opener this coming Sunday. Football is back, whoo hoo. Have a great day, God Bless.

Yesterday afternoon around 3:30 I pulled into Minturn. It was a short but great hunt. I might head back out on Wednesday and do a little fishing there and see how the other two guys from Texas are doing. Warning! Skip the next paragraph if you don’t like to read about hunting and shooting an animal!

The reason I’m home so early is on Saturday, the first day of hunting season, I was done at 6:15 in the morning! I woke up around 4:30 as did all of us and to keep it short, was in the mountains hiking up a hill at about 9000 feet by 6 am. As we neared the top of a ridge, we were stopped in our tracks by a bugle (an elk) about 300 yards to the right of us. We bugled back and right behind us about 80 yards, another bull elk screamed at us. We froze watching for movement through the trees and I could make out shadows and brief glimpses of brown fur between the trees. After about a minute we heard crashing down to the left and I saw about 5 elk, a bull and 4 cows, running down the mountain I had just climbed. I raised the rifle an took a shot at the bull while he was on the run at about 303 yards. You can hear the thump even from that distance which is about 3 football fields away. I knew I hit him but these are 700 to 800 pound or more animals so I leveled my rifle to shoot again. My second shot was at 360 yards, which is a darn far shot, and down he went. Last year I shot one and he too went down but then was gone. By the way, a few months later he was spotted doing well high on a mountain. This year though, my bull was down for good. My buddy congratulated me and told me what a great shot it was. I’m lucky as I’ve always been blessed with being a good shot my whole life. Not sure why but I just am, knock on wood. Luckily we could get the Ranger (an all terrain 4 wheel drive buggy that’ll go just about anywhere) right to him so he was easy to get out after we gutted (butchered) him. This was a big relief as Sunday morning we had to pack out about 500 pounds of elk 2 miles up and down a mountain which took 4 of us over 3 and a half hours. So anyhow, I was done at 6:15 with a nice 5 X 6 bull which will make a lot of good steaks, summer sausage, jerky, stew meat, roasts and more. I went out with my buddy Marty on his hunts as I was done and thankfully he got his elk Sunday morning so we then left yesterday afternoon.

Marty was so excited as he had never bagged an animal in his life in over 20 years of hunting! He was shaking so bad when he shot we were all surprised he shot straight and true. It was great for him. He was like a little kid he was so excited. He said he wanted this more than losing his virginity as he knew someday he’d lose that but wasn’t sure he’d ever get an elk, ha ha.

Last night Lori, the boys, Marty and his wife Mel and I all went out to dinner for sushi at Matsu to celebrate. The chef where we hunt is not really a chef at all so the food is never very good but we’re not there for the food. That’s the one thing they need to change.

Tomorrow I’m headed down to Denver to do some business and the kids are back in school and Lori’s back to work. Not sure what we’ll do today. I’ll post pictures in a few days but wanted to give everyone some warning if some of you don’t want to see a dead animal. Here’s a few below of the country and our hunting cabin. For what it’s worth, I only hunt things that we’ll eat. I don’t trophy hunt and shoot bears or stuff them and hang them on the wall. It’s a magical time of the year I look forward to every year and both boys want to go next year. There’s worse things for a kid that hiking high in the mountains trying to stalk wild game. And by the way is it easy as many people never even get a shot at an animal. It’s hard work, physically and mentally demanding and also dangerous. Hunters are the biggest conservationists there are and contribute more money and resources to saving our wildlife and wild lands than anyone. There’s a tv commercial out there that says “Hug a Hunter” for those very reasons and it’s 100% true.

Yesterday, Jagger, Harley and I hiked up Booth Falls. It’s a beautiful hike, about 3.5 hours round trip. I took 3 or 4 steps I Jagger’s 1 very long stride. Needless to say he had to pause and wait for me every so often.

Ty skate boarded in town with Sonny and a new friend, Will. Ty is actually mountain biking with Will right now and I need to pick him up for a birthday party in 20 minutes.

Good afternoon, sorry for the late post. Yesterday was a whirlwind.

The day started off crazy as my surgery scheduler texted me early in the morning stating she had been throwing up all night. Doug doesn’t believe her. She is a hard worker when she is in the office, however she has taken more PTO than anyone on staff. I hope she has a lovely 4 day weekend.

I covered her work and my own and I managed to slip out at 4:30 to pick up Harley. Harley jumped all ove me with muddy paws when I picked her up. I don’t think the dry cleaner will be able to get the mud out of my white jacket.

Jagger went to the volleyball game with friends and then the soccer game after that. Ty stayed at school with Sonny and Will and then stayed all night at Sonny’s. Jagger got a ride home and after I fed him dinner we took Ty clothes so he could sleepover at So ny’s.

Jagger and I hung out for a while and I was on dog duty all night. It was raining all night so the floors look beautiful and the dogs smell lovely…

I’m leaving today around noon for Pyramid Peak to go elk hunting. First up though is Back to School Night. I often complain about the $26K per year per student about our school, but it’s a really good school, just a bit overpriced in my opinion. Last night Lori and I and half the town of Vail went to Back to School Night. It was great to meet the new teachers and see the old. They get about 100 applicants for every open position so obviously the teachers are pretty good. After all, who doesn’t want to live and teach in Vail, ha. We also saw lots of parents that we only get to see at school as we’re all so busy. We joked that it was the social event of the season.

Picture Day went well with both boys looking sharp. My back and knee were bothering me as my I T band that stretches from your hip to your knee was sore. I rolled it out pretty well on a foam roller so hopefully I’ll be ok.

Harley spent the night at the vet as she had xrays and apparently has some sort of blockage from eating a toy or a rock or who knows what. Hope she’s better today. I’m sure that’ll cost $500 as vets are as expensive as regular doctors these days.

Guess I’ll get moving. Hope everyone is well and has big plans for the weekend. It’s that time of year where Lori gets to do the blog for the next 3 to 5 days so Tom, if it’s not up, let her know! Take care and God Bless.

Summer’s almost gone, college football starts this weekend and it’s also Labor Day. Then the trees will change (they’ve already started) and soon after the snow will come. I leave for elk hunting tomorrow and today is Picture Day at school. Lori has a 7:30 meeting meaning she needs to be out the door at 7 and Harley didn’t eat last night or this morning so she’ll be going to the vet. Just another day.

Last night we all went to Sweet Basil for dinner as a patient had given Lori a $200 gift certificate. We sat out on the patio and had a fun time. It’s cool this morning but supposed to warm up later in the day. I did turn the heat on for the first time this season just to take the chill off as it was 64 inside. Might as well cover up the A/C unit for the season.

As I said yesterday, we managed to get the ski locker cleaned out. It’s 6;46 now and we need to leave around 7:30 so I’d better get moving. Have a great day and God Bless.
