Halloween out, Christmas in

Yesterday morning I went to the gym and when I arrived home I began to take down the Halloween decorations. Lori then came out and put everything away, which is the hard part. Today we’ll be getting the Christmas stuff down from the garage attic and get that party started.

Lori’s headache, as we knew, is back. She’s toughing it out but I can tell when she’s in pain. Tomorrow I’ll call and see what I can do to get her in right away. When I called Friday they said the soonest appointment was November 27th which isn’t going to work! Trust me, I’ll get her in.

Last night the boys and Ben played upstairs and Ben spent the night. My Mom came over for a visit and then Sara, our babysitter from years ago, stopped by and hung out for the evening.

Here’s a comment from Annette,

Annette says:

We used to cut down a tree every year in NV. You are right, it’s fun trying to pick a tree but in our house I had the last word. Hope things go well for Lori and she is finally pain free.

It IS so much fun cutting down your own tree, I’m going to try to drag my Mom with us this year but I wouldn’t bet on her going. One things for sure, Lori will not have the last word, unless she really wants it!

It was warm yesterday, comparatively speaking, and is supposed to be nice today as well. Then the cold and snow will come tomorrow. Time to get on the Christmas lights as the Broncos are only off for one weekend. Hope everyone is well, take care and God Bless.

Success

Well we arrived at the surgery center at 10:15 and the misses went in around an hour later. The whole thing took about 15 minutes and then the nurse and doctor called me in to tell me they isolated her pain in disc 2 and 3. This means we had to go straight to a CT Scan about 6 miles away. I of course had chatted up the nurses and gave them each a bottle of wine so we were getting special treatment. The doctor received two bottles and after talking to us before she went in and learning we were not only patients but friends of Dr. Corenman in Vail, (who sends them a lot of patients) was also very accomodating. In any transaction, which this was too, it’s all about the relationship as people are still people. Anyhow the misses was in recovery for about 30 minutes and when they rolled her out in a wheelchair, she was virtually headache free! I won’t go into the technicalities of what they did but it’s not a pleasant procedure. We all know how tough Lori is, but they don’t, or didn’t, until she was through. The doctor when talking to me said, “she’s one tough girl” to which I replied, “I told you so”.

We rushed to the CT Scan where we received the royal treatment as Jamie (our new friend and procedure coordinator who now loves us and our wine) had called ahead saying they needed to get us right in with no wait. (she sends them a lot of business too, are you beginning to see how things work?) 15 minutes later we were driving home across town with Lori still headache free. I kept asking her if her head was ok so many times I probably gave her a headache! Now I knew the pain reliever the doc shot between her discs had to wear off sooner or later so I kept checking. She pretty much made it through the night but this morning her head is up a little bit on the pain scale. This is expected and in fact, they said it might hurt a bit more along with the neck (injection sight and discs) for up to 5 days. Regardless, we’re thrilled that after 3 plus years, we’ve finally isolated the problem.

So what’s next, well, it’s neck fusion surgery, the same one that Peyton Manning had. Hopefully in November we’ll get in and the surgeon will perform a couple procedures at the same time. First he’ll have to go in the front of her neck and fuse discs two and three. Here they’ll use a plate and a cadaver bone. Second, he needs to go in the back of her neck and open up the nerve channels for the 5th and 6th nerve so she will regain the strength in her right arm. Then she should be good to go! So that’s about it, pretty simple huh. We’ll keep you posted, now we’re just waiting to see what insurance covers.

The boys had Chess Club after school so I picked them up at 4pm. Ty had called sayin dad where are you as I was supposed to pick them up at 3:45! Jag and I then headed out to a baseball meeting with the coach and team that drafted him for the 2014 season. They treat it just like professional baseball these days. Kids tryout the year before, get drafted and then have winter training starting now even though our first game isn’t until probably sometime in April. Our team is going to try to raise money to go play a tournament in Cooperstown New York where the Baseball Hall of Fame is. It’ll be a week long, 7 games and in next June or July. We’d make it a family vacation as they give you a cabin on a lake there and it’s supposedly beautiful in upstate New York. The kids that were there (5 of them) were great and even though Jag only knew one (the coaches son who was on his team last year) they all hit it off. The meeting was at a Pizza Hut and there was a table of girls about 12 or 13 years old that were flirting with the boys all night long. Finally our guys reciprocated, here it comes. It’s great for Jag to have another crowd of friends rather than just at school. He’s really social and makes friends with everyone and like I said, these are good kids.

We were home a bit after 7pm and then settled in for the night. Today I’ll be taking down all the Halloween lights and will try to get up some Christmas lights. Monday I’ll go to the forest service office and spend $10 for our tree permit. We still put up our fake tree but also go cut one for in our family room. It’s so much fun and when you cut one, they’re so fresh, not a single needle ever falls off! The tree always kind of looks like a Charlie Brown tree as it’s not from a tree farm so it isn’t all trimmed and perfect which we love even more. We string popcorn and put home made ornaments on the real one, and throw in a few store bought colored balls. The fun part is walking through the woods and arguing as a family as to which one we want. It’s not a real argument, just each of us saying “this is the perfect one!”. After we cut it down and drag it back to the truck we have some hot chocolate and sandwiches out in the forest, it’s loads of fun.

Time to run. Ty is downstairs with me while Mom and Jag are still sleeping. Ty and Lacey wanted to get up early, him saying “I want someone to go downstairs with me” and Lacey barking, so I rolled out of bed to take them both down. I think I’ll run to the gym.

Here’s a comment from Robi,

Robi says:

Prayers are with you misses! The boys looked great in their costumes and they are getting so big, and they are so handsome! Can’t wait to see them in 27 days!

Hope everyone is well and has a great weekend. Take care and God Bless.

November 1st

L1040193

Hope everyones Halloween was great. Our boys each went to their friends house so it was Lori and I at home until I picked each of them up. Here’s a comment from Aunt Robi, the only one to tell us what she dressed up as, although we’re not sure what it was,

robi says:

So sorry for the misses, hope she can get relief! I am at work and I dressed up as a co-worker who lets say, is very well endowed! HAPPY HALLOWEEN :)

Today the misses has a procedure scheduled at 11am. I was going to cancel last night but we might go ahead with it. First though we’re checking with our doctor in Vail who we know and trust the most. When I checked out reviews for the doc that will do the procedure this morning, I found he was suspended 8 years ago in California for substance abuse. Now this doesn’t mean he’s a bad doctor (could have been weed for all we know) but his office reviews were not that great either mostly due to a rude staff and long wait times. However when I picked up Jag, his friends Mom said that he is the guy she goes to and she was referred to by our doctor (who we sent her to) in Vail. So now I’m confused, but if Dr. Corenman refers patients to him, that’s good enough for us so we might be going after all. First though I’ll call up to Vail this morning to check him out. On top of that, this procedure is not covered by our insurance. Others like United Health Care cover it but due to Obummercare, ours stopped meaning I have to come up with a few thousand bucks with no notice. (and the dems are still pushing this crap, sorry but now it’s affecting me personally so I can rant and now we find out 6, that’s right 6 people nationwide, signed up on Day 1, hows that for success! No wonder they won’t say how many enrolled) We’ll keep you posted.

UPDATE, WE ARE GOING IN FOR THE PROCEDURE AT 11AM, OUT BY 2!

No matter what happens, today or tomorrow the Halloween lights come down and tomorrow the Christmas lights go up! It’s a perfect time for the Broncos to have their bye week (week off) so I can get some stuff done. Jag’s up with me and Mom and Ty are still sleeping. I caught Lori awake at 3 as with her head she just can’t get a good nights sleep. I don’t know how she does it. That’s another reason to maybe take a chance on this guy today, we have to get her some relief.

It was so cold and windy last night that it limited the number of trick or treaters we had. It was the wind that did it as the temperature wasn’t that bad. The boys both looked great and Lori threw two great parties at school for each kids class. I don’t know how she does it.

Time to run as I have some calls and decisions to make pretty fast. I’m leaning towards going now if I get the ok from Dr. Corenman, I’ll call and let you all know.

Say a prayer for the misses and God Bless.L1040189

One or two?

That’s the question, will Lori have one or two surgeries? We found out today the only way to get her arm fixed and get her strength back is to have surgery. They need to go in through the back of her neck and open up the channels for the 5th and 6th nerve on the right side. First up though, we’ll go for a disc density, or something like that, procedure hopefully as early as tomorrow. Here they’ll go in with needles and once they’re in, will then inject some pain reliever and wait and see if the headache goes away. If it does, then they’ll stop, if not, they’ll do another procedure where they do a nerve block between the discs. This would mean about a six hour day for her. Now here’s the funny part, if the pain medicine works, then we know that she needs to have discs 2 and 3 fused. This means going in from the front. Are you with me so far? To sum it up, if the first procedure works Friday, we stop and schedule two surgeries, at the same time. If she has two procedures Friday we start with one surgery to relive the arm weakness and continue to try to fix the headache.

So if we can get in tomorrow, we’re in. If not, we’re hoping for Monday or Tuesday. A week from Monday we’re headed up to our other doctor at the Steadman Clinic in Vail. We’re going basically for a second opinion. Both her doctors are recognized as the best in their field and they know eachothe

Now to last night, Ty played great and his team won their first game. Meanwhile Jag stayed home with me and Jennifer and KayLynn, who both came home from school with him.

I managed to finish my work but still have lots to do. It seems I always have lots to do. I did manage to catch a little bit of lying by Kathleen Sebielus when she had to testify about health care. It’s inconceivable how these politicians just flat out lie with such a straight face. Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

Tonight we have lots of pumpkins to carve and the kids will be filling their bags with treats and sweets. Then it’s downhill to Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. Throw in a few birthdays and it’ll fly by in no time.

Let us know what you’re dressing up as, we’re excited to hear. Take care and God Bless.

“The condition of our country today? It’s kind of like folks listening to the band playing while the Titanic is sinking, and them asking them to play a different tune.”

Back to the doctor

This morning at 9:45 we’re back at the doctor to review Lori’s emg and mri. Hopefully we’ll then come up with a plan on what to do to try to relieve her pain. I think trying to get rid of the pain is the first thing to address and then we need to look at the numbness and weakness in her right arm. I don’t care if we have to sell everything we own, I’ll do whatever we need to do to get this fixed and relieve her pain. We’ll keep you posted.

Tonight Ty has his first basketball game and the boys and Jennifer are carving pumpkins after school. I have a ton of work to do today, mostly on the phone and computer getting 2014 pricing and projections wrapped up. I set myself a goal of having this done by November 1st but it’s going to be tough.

My neck is sore from sleeping funny, I think it’s time for a new bed. Uncle T asked yesterday what I wanted for Christmas, well there ya go, a new bed and one with a pillow top! If that’s too much, we could also use a shell for our pick-up truck or insulation for the attic.

The boys are watching the Goldbergs which is a new show on tv about a family in the 1970’s, it’s hilarious. The mom is over the top with her meddling.

Guess I’ll run, lucky none of our mothers are meddlers!

God Bless

A nice cold fall day

It came as advertised, cool, misty and rainy. It really didn’t rain per se, it just kind of misted all day but it was enough to soak the roads and get you wet if you were out in it for any length of time. We were busy all day with Lori at school and me here and there and on the phone and computer. After school I had to run to a couple of grocery stores for some supplies for the Halloween parties this week at school. Then I went back out to get Mister Ty some new snow boots for $60! I don’t know where they get off charging $60 for size 5 kids boots, although they are nice boots. Then Ty had basketball practice until 7pm and Lori had to go to a school meeting for 6th grade continuation which is another word for graduation.

Lori’s arm is really sore and she’s losing strength and coordination meaning were almost for sure looking at surgery. We thought we had an appointment today but its tomorrow. Hopefully we’ll find something out!

I’m off to the gym and then Jag has inter-murals again this morning. I’m not a big fan as I have to cut my morning workout short or get up at 4:30 to be back in time to take him at 7am. I am glad though that he’s into it as it is extra exercise which is always good.

No politics today, I’m trying hard. Take care, hope everyone is well and let us know what you’re dressing up as for Halloween. And we don’t want to hear that you’re not dressing up! Do something crazy and fun and let the inner you come out, put on a costume!

God Bless

Cold weather a coming

If you live in Colorado, get out your coats and snow boots. This morning I took Jag to McDonalds for a rare visit to get a Egg McMuffin and Hot Cakes and Sausage for Ty. You can feel it in the air and it feels good!

Yesterday we were off to the Bronco game around 12:30 with Jeff and Tina. It started out a little shaky and then turned into a rout with us winning by 20 some points. On my phone I saw an email saying Lou Reed dies yesterday. This is a big loss as he was truly a pioneer in music and shaped many peoples lives, we all remember a Lou Reed song or two from growing up.

Tomorrow we go to see the misses doc and hopefully will get a referral for some more injections to hopefully relieve her pain.

It’s now 7:30 so time to run, hope everyone is well, have a great week.

A fun party(s)

The day flew by and before we knew it, it was time to go to the party. We dropped Jag in his best vampire regalia at his party around 6:30 and then headed down the street 6 blocks to our party. I’m going to turn this over to the misses as I can’t begin to describe it. In short, it must have taken a month to get everything decorated. Every where you look the house was full of Halloween stuff. Before Lori takes over, here’s a comment from yesterday,

Annette says:

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING! Most CA schools students can’t wear costumes or have Halloween parties (It’s pagan you know). I think if I was a college student I would dress as a cowboy or indian and have all my friends do the same. Are you not in college to rebel? What are they going to do kick you out and get sued?

Annette is so right here, watch out as Christmas (Jesus and/or Santa) will soon be outlawed, wonder which one will be targeted first! Here’s Lori…

Walking up to the house the front lawn was turned into a graveyard with tall slender wooden crosses that were lighted up from the base with haunting bluish white lights. On the steps to the front door there were creepy carved pumpkins purple up lights in the pots with dried branches and many crows. To the left of the front door was a life size mummy with glowing blue eyes. Upon entering Ty and Aime’s house she had a back drop of a haunted house, branches with more black crows, spiderwebs and the prettiest display of assorted candies you’ve ever seen. Aime hung white sheets over furniture and her walls with sayings like. “Trick or Treat,” “REDRUM,” amongst other creative print. The living room ceiling was adorned with shredded black tulle and the adult bar had a bowl full of red jello shots in syringes, a creepy red punch and a set of golden science beakers of a shot of something. She had a mannequin dressed in a costume including a black hooded robe..the costume was so detailed that I may ask to borrow it someday! They had a tented lounge in the backyard equipped with a comfy couch and a game table.

The basement was set up for all of the kiddos…clementines peeled with a celery stem sticking out to look like mini pumpkins, bananas cut in half standing up with chocolate chips for a face to make ghosts, a treat station to fill a gift bag and take it home, haunted cupcakes and at least 15 pizzas.

Most impressive… the photo both they rented. A real photo booth that takes three fast pictures behind a curtain. There was so much more…I’ll see if I can upload some pictures.

If you are going to a party…go to the event planners party!

Take care..god bless

Scary Saturday

Last night Jag went to the Zombie Haunted House with 4 friends about 6pm.  I picked him up at 10pm from his friends house. I guess it was pretty scary. Their group had a guide to get them through who was part of the whole thing and the 2 boys and 3 girls were led through a maze of zombies, ghosts and other creatures in the dark. He said he wasn’t scared much but I could tell some of the things stuck with him. Personally I don’t like scary things like haunted houses or even scary movies. Tonight he has another party at some girl from schools house. All the kids will be wearing their costumes to this one. Meanwhile Mom, Ty and I are supposed to go to a Halloween party of our own but I have no idea what to wear. Then of course tomorrow we have the Broncos game. I’ll probably have to go as a cowboy while the misses has a bunch of things to choose from.

Speaking of Halloween, yesterday the University of Colorado (and no this isn’t really politics) said students cannot dress up as cowboys, indians or wear a sombrero of any kind. Are you freaking kidding me? Now we have a public university telling 18 to 23 year old kids what they can and cannot be for Halloween? Unbelievable, I’m speechless. I must have been a cowboy and indian a bunch of times when I was a kid. I even think I wore a sombrero once too! When and where is this silliness going to stop. What’s next, no Christmas trees or presents? You already can’t display baby Jesus and the manger scene in any public places. It’s really hard to believe how far we’ve come in the wrong direction as a society. Sorry, I guess this borders on politics a little but it’s just us as a people as a whole being stupid, no Dem or GOP thing here, it’s all of them. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Here’s a comment from the birthday girl (her b-day was the 23rd),

robi says:

WOW – doesn’t sound good for the misses, maybe the other doctors will come up with something for her to try that is less invasive. Yes Douglas, I agree with you but you need to relax or you are gonna have a seizure!!!!!

Don’t worry about me, I don’t get that upset about things, just like to write about them. Yes we’re praying we can get the misses some relief. When she’s in visible pain, you know it hurts as she normally doesn’t complain. Oh oh, there’s a 3 year old dressed up as a cowgirl on tv at a Bass Pro Shop event, hope she doesn’t get in trouble!

Last it was Robins birthday on the 23rd. Sorry I forgot to mention it, hope it was great.

It’s been beautiful here with temps in the 60’s and cool at night. We’re getting ready to re-tile the kitchen nook soon in our never ending effort to fix this place up. I’m trying to figure out how to come up with the cash to insulate the attic ($2000, uggh) so it won’t be so cold upstairs this winter and so our power bills will be lower, will see.

Time to run, hope everyone is well, take care and God Bless.

Freaky Friday

We’re supposed to go to a Halloween Party tomorrow but have no idea what to dress up as. Jag will be with a bunch of kids at the Zombie Haunted House so it’ll be Ty, Lori and I.

How did you like yesterdays post? There’s a few choices, you either don’t agree, are in denial, or maybe you do agree (like Annette) or can’t type or figure out how to comment. I can’t think of many other choices, oh, maybe you don’t read anymore, ha ha!

Here’s out one and only comment from our number 1 interactive reader, Annette,

Annette says:

If you are a history buff at all you could see the writings on the wall 10 yrs. ago. We just keep hoping things will get better (they won’t). Everyone thinks their country is going to be the one to last forever but the system is so broken it can’t be fixed. The revolution is coming and it’s not going to be pretty. I feel sorry for our grandchildren and our great grandchildren. Ok I’m going to get off my soap box now. I am trying to live each day as it comes and do the best I can with it. I love hearing everything you all are doing. I hope something works for Lori and all of you take care.

Thanks as always, now to Lori. We had the EMG test yesterday, boy is she tough! This is where they stick needles into your arms and then send electrical current to the nerve and record the results. Short story is she has one screwed up neck that appears to be 40+ years older than it is. He doesn’t know if she should have surgery as he just does the nerve tests but he said he’s seen necks like hers fuse themselves and others that need to be fused through surgery. She has a little weakness in her left arm but not enough so he’d say surgery right now! We go see our Denver doctor (surgeon) next Tuesday and then our Vail doctor November 12th. The important thing now is to try to get rid of the headache. It appears to be the 5th and 6th disc that are causing the weakness and loss of feeling in parts of her arm. The problem though is if you go in to fuse, where do you start and more importantly, where do you stop! The doctor today said you don’t want to go in and have 2 discs fused and then have to go back a year later and have to have more done. In theory, to make sure we get it, she could have 4 or 5 discs fused! She could then still look left and right but not up and down. I think if we can get rid of the headache, we’ll hang for a bit and see if it gets worse, of course we need to see what our two doctors say first. So, there you have it, lots happening here. How’s that for no politics, we can just talk necks for a while.

I could write more but I feel some political musings coming on so time to go!

Take care and God Bless.
