Football tonight!

Hard to believe that the NFL football season starts tonight. It’ll be the Giants and the Cowboys. I can’t remember a Wednesday night game before. Lot’s going on around here, school’s in full swing as is work. The weather is also changing as we’re expecting cooler temps this weekend.

Here’s a couple of headlines from the news today, check it out,

New “Geo Fence” Technology Lets DHS, FBI and Apple Command Your Phone’s Camera and Microphone,

Now why does the government need to turn on your phones camera and microphone? Why would this be valuable to them, talk about Big Brother or 1984, wow!

Meanwhile over the pond,

Breakdown: Three Tons of Food Looted From Grocery Stores In Spain As Millions Struggle

People are leaving Spain en mass. The wealthy are pulling their money out of the banks (while they still can) and leaving the country, while others are taking food while they can. The police can’t stop them as there’s just too many of them, wow!

Economic shock: global food prices jump 10%

Now this one we are all well aware of. For a few years, companies have just been shrinking their packaging so we think we’re getting the same food for the same money (like we’re stupid) but they can no longer continue to do this and are now raising prices on smaller boxes, talk about a double whammy, wow!

and finally,

June Foodstamp Recipients Hit All Time High As Three Times As Many Americans Enter Poverty As Find Jobs

Following a brief period in which it seemed that US foodstamp recipients may have peaked, with those living in poverty maxing out at 46.514 million in December 2011, and then declining modestly for the next few months, June saw a new surge in those Americans living in poverty and thus eligible for foodstamps, with 173,600 new entrants into the system, bringing the total to a new all time high of 46.670 million and once again rising fast. Furthermore, with subsequent emergency events affecting the heartland due to the drought, the administration has made sure even more Americans will be eligible going forward. As a result expect the July and August numbers to promptly surpass 47 million on their way to the psychological resistance level of 50 million. Indicatively, the 173,600 increase in Foodstamps recipients in June was three times greater than Americans finding jobs (64,000, most of which part-time) according to the BLS. Finally, a new record was also breached for American households on foodstamps, which now hit 22.4 million, an increase of 106,298 households. The average benefit per household decline once more, this time to $276.5. Not an all time low, but just above it.

Now do you still think the country is headed in the right direction? I guess we can give out more free stuff to people or wait, maybe we can fix the problems by addressing the real issues.

Last night the dems said at their convention that we “all belong to government” and have to all contribute to it, we owe it. Now wait a minute, I think government is here to work and serve us, not us them. I think this is the fundamental difference between the two parties. I’m for equal opportunity while the dems are for equal outcome. In other words, they think everyone should get the same benefits in life meaning the same house, car, and income, no matter if you work hard and your neighbor doesn’t work at all, you both get the same of everything, unless you work for the government , then you get better health care and retirement benefits.

Does this sound like the principals America was founded and built on? I think not, it sounds more like some eastern European country to me. I’ll leave it up to you to decide for yourself.

Well, lucky for you it’s time for me to take the oldest to inter-murals. Hope you all are well, take care and God Bless.

Home safe

We left Steamboat around 8:30 am and made it home a bit after 11. We pretty much missed the traffic except for the last half hour when we hit I-70. It took a few hours to unpack and clean up around here and I finally finished the laundry late last night. After a trip to the grocery store, we had Grandma over for some bbq chicken, corn on the cob, salad and home made peach cobbler which is the misses new killer dessert.

The boys played after helping unload the car as all their friends arrived home around the same time. This morning we’re back at it. School, work, blah blah blah. The oldest is having a bowl of Frosted Flakes as he has inter-murals at 7am. They are extra p.e. classes at 7 each morning that he signed up for. Today is the discus and the shot put. The youngest is still sleeping.

Not a lot else going on except we feel like we need a vacation from our vacation. I just noticed they have flu shots at the doctor (on the news) so we’ll have go get one asap. It’s supposed to be cooler later in the week (the 70’s) but is still going to be in the 90’s today.

Time to run, hope everyone is well and had a great last weekend of summer, take care and God Bless.

Monday morning

Ok, everyone on our trip (both family’s) want to move to Steamboat! It’s hard not to want to live in such a beautiful place with such a sense of community. The towns big enough to have all the necessities like good schools, doctors, restaurants, hospitals and an airport (just out of town) with flights to major cities all over the country, yet is small enough so you see people on the street that you know. The weather and scenery is beyond compare and the air is so fresh you can feel it in your lungs. Who knows, maybe someday we’ll end up here.

Yesterday morning we started our day with a side trip 3.5 miles out of town to Fish Creek Falls. It was breathtaking and the kids climbed and climbed all through the rocks and stream below the picturesque falls above them. It was packed being Labor Day weekend. Later in the day after some lunch we took them down to play in the Yampa River. We decided to skip the bull riding as it would have been over $200 for us all to get in which was not in the budget. We finished up our trip with dinner at Carl’s Tavern down by the river, sitting outside and finishing up just in time before the thunderstorms came. A little more pool time by the kids and finally the day was done.

We’ll try to get out of here by 9am to avoid the traffic on I-70 as it’ll be packed. Another side benefit of being up here is you just don’t watch much tv. So no politics as we’ve been too busy doing outdoor activities to stay caught up! I’m sure I didn’t miss anything, did I.

Hope everyone is well and had a great holiday, Enjoy the final day of rest before we all head back to work. God Bless.

Mist Rising Off The Mountain

Good morning.  The air is crisp with just enough chill in it to be oh, so refreshing.  I’m sitting outside on the deck breathing in deeply and watching the mist rise from the tips of the mountains. Stunning.

We woke early….the Mr. woke early to ask me, “what time it was”….5:40a.m….then asked, “where are the quarters for the showers”…followed by, “where is the key to the bathrooms. ” The kids chimed in with”Good Morning Mommy and Daddy”  5:40a.m….it is.

The lake was gorgeous….mist, mist and more mist!  The water was absolutely still.  Not a ripple to be seen and the mist was eerily rising up from the water.  I thought a dragon might fly over or the Lockness monster would rear her pretty, little head at any time.  We showered (free) made really thick black coffee and headed off to breakfast at the Road House. YUM!!  On the way back we saw a sheep herder’s trailer…yep a real sheep drive!

Ok, fast forward to Sunday am, the misses is making breakfast in our 4 bedroom, 4 bath, condo in Steamboat. To finish up what the misses was saying, it was a real sheep drive! There must have been over 200 sheep with dogs on each side of the herd and a couple guys on horses behind the pack. The boys stood in the middle of them as they went right around them, it was quite a sight. We loaded up the truck after breakfast and were out of the cabin by 11am. An hour later we were checking into the condo where we are now. The afternoon was spent with the kids at the pool and getting settled into our place. We opened a bottle of wine at 5pm and then after a glass, headed out to our friends restaurant Slopeside which is right on the ski slopes. Billy and Michelle met us there at a bit after 6 and the rest of the night is a blur. Billy had arranged a special table under an awning to protect us from the mountain sun and we ate and drank and laughed for the next 4 hours or so. The evening was interrupted by our friends 8 year old getting sort of lost. The kids were playing hide and seek as there’s the ski slopes right outside the restaurant so all the kids play out front while the parents sit and eat. It was dark and the misses jumped into protective mother bear mode and within minutes had servers and bartenders not only from our restaurant but also from the Shearton, looking for him. We soon found him as he was pretending he was camping and building a tepee and stick fire (without matches) under a tree. His Mom was freaked out too. We had just went through this the day before with our youngest and him taking off up at the cabins on a hike also! I told all kids this morning, no more running off as they will be charged for the next search party we have to put together.

I’ve already walked down the road to the store for eggs and bacon this morning. I took the boys with me and we saw a hot air balloon taking off. It’s gorgeous 65 degrees out. Today I think we’re going up to Fish Creek Falls and then maybe to let the kids play in the Yampa River. From 11 to 3 there’s the chili challenge in town with chili cooks from all over the west trying to wine the tope award of the best chile. We’ll have to be trying them all! Tonight we’re supposed to go at 6 to the PBR which is the Pro Bull Riders event at the fairgrounds with Billy and Michelle and their friend who is a bull rider from Walden of all places. We then have dinner reservations at another friends place at 8:30. So a big day’s in store. Time to eat breakfast and then get cleaned up for the day.

Tomorrow am we’ll head down the hill trying to beat most of the traffic but will most likely get stuck in it. Have a great day and take care, God Bless and we’ll talk tomorrow.

Saturday morning

We made it up to our cabin by about 4pm after stopping in Steamboat for a bit and picking up some chairs. It was raining just about the time we arrived but we unpacked and set up camp. Our friends were a few hours behind us and arrived around 7:15. For dinner we had green chili , s’mores and salad and boy was it good!

Everyone settled in to bed pretty early for the big day tomorrow. We were up early and made a huge breakfast. The boys of course were infatuated with chopping wood and helping start the fire. We made it to the boat and spent the next 4 hours on the lake. More on this later as I’m short on time. The rest of the day was also fun and steaks, green beans and potato’s for dinner with peach cobbler made in the dutch oven in the fire. This morning we’re having breakfast at the road house. i didn’t know it but we’re only 20 miles from Encampment Wyoming but the catch is the road is only open in the summer time.

More later but eggs are arriving so time to run.

God Bless,

Camping

Today mid morning, we take off for Steamboat Lake to go camping. We’ve rented these little cabins (think of a big bathroom) that barely has room for the two sets of bunk beds, for the next two nights. There’s no bathroom, kitchen, or anything else, just two sets of beds. We’ll be cooking over a fire with our cast iron cookware and using an outhouse. They do have 2 coin operated showers (the misses can’t wait to see these!) somewhere at the campsite. On Friday we have a huge pontoon boat rented for 4 hours to cruise the lake and fish. It has a bbq on board and we’ll be cooking lunch on the water. Our new drama free friends are coming with us and have also rented a cabin. They have dentist appointments around noon today so they’ll leave Denver around 3pm. We’ll be up there with a fire and dinner going by the time they arrive. The misses and Rachel have been planning our meals for a week now and it looks like it’ll be quite the foodie event.

On Saturday we head into Steamboat and all check into a giant luxurious condo until Monday am. I’m sure by then a place with a shower and a real bathroom will be pretty exciting, especially for the ladies.

It’s hard to believe it’s September. Im so sick of political ads. Of course we have Obama lying on tv saying the republicans oppose abortion EVEN in the case of incest or rape! Unbelievable! It’s flat out 100% untrue yet they continue to run ads on tv saying so. Divide, divide, divide, that’s the democrats plan. There’s a rising star who’s a mayor from Utah and happens to be a black republican who gave a great speech (that was of course ignored by the media) at the convention. By the time she was through, her Wikepedia page (an on line dictionary) had been hacked calling her a sell out, a whore and other disparaging things. Have you noticed how the democrats are so angry. I was in Greeley yesterday at a buddy’s place who’s a custom cowboy hat maker. He’s made hats for people all over the World and uses all these machine made between 1860 and 1920. Anyhow he made the cowboy hats for the republican delegation going to this years convention. He told me that when he did this he got tons of hate mail! Unbelievable, for making hats! He said he responded to each one telling them that when the democratic convention was here in Denver 4 years ago,  he also made hats for them. He finished his reply to all the “haters” by saying his mortgage was nonpartisan meaning the bank really didn’t care from what party his income came from. I asked him if he received any hate mail when he made hats for the democrats (which could have been possible as Greeley is a farming town that’s heavily republican) and he told me no, not one. A friend of the misses at school (another mom) said she went to a Women for Obama event but was really disturbed and turned off as all the women were so angry. They were so angry that she’s now voting for Romney.

If you think about it, all the dems have done is try to trash the republicans. They’ve tried to paint them as the party of only the rich who hate women, seniors, minorities and the middle class. This is their plan as they cannot talk about what they’ve actually done for the past 4 years as nothing has worked. It’s time they take responsibility for their actions rather than continuing to try to blame George Bush for everything. Those days are long gone. Do yourself a favor and go here and read Condoleezza Rice’s speech, you won’t find it on the major tv networks as they think (and want you to think) ALL republicans are rich white guys. Check it out,

www.washingtonpost.com/politics/rnc-2012-condoleezza-rice-delivers-speech-to-republican-national-convention-in-tampa-full-text/2012/08/29/334d8122-f224-11e1-892d-bc92fee603a7_story.html

Alright sorry for the politics this morning but I think I’ve been pretty good at abstaining for some time now. There comes a time when you just can’t take the division, the lies and the negativity anymore. If Obama wins again, we could enter an era that could possibly destroy the American dream for generations to come. Can’t you see that? Is welfare a hand up or a way of life? Does government give you your rights or does the constitution and God? You have to decide for yourself but if you really look at the issues, I don’t see how you can vote for a second term for the President. Are you one of the angry ones? Do you believe all the lies on tv? Do you really really believe that republicans are really against women, minorities, education, helping the poor and ending medicare and throwing seniors off a cliff? Of course not. Republicans are good people too. They are women, have children, are non white, are hard working middle class and want good educations for their kids and have parents and grandparents. All we want is government to stop spending money they don’t have instead of making false promises that future generations cannot cover. We want the freedoms that our parents and grandparents had and we want to shape our own future, not be compartmentalized into some “class” or station in life. Even a immigrant child who is a minority that grows up poor with uneducated parents should be able to have the possibility of becoming President one day. Don’t you agree? If you do, congratulations as you are a republican, at least for this year. Enough said.

Have a great weekend and God Bless you and God Bless The United States of America.

Read this!

Here’s a comment from Annette, thanks for being the first, and so far, only one to reply,

Annette says:

The CA people would love to go to Hawaii but can’t afford it. I haven’t been since Dec of 1964 .

Maybe we can stick you in our suitcase!

Ok, I came across this today while reading some stuff and thought I should share, read it all the way through, it won’t take that long.

How Old Is Grandma?

Stay with this… the answer is at the end… guess before you read the answer, I’ll bet you’re wrong!

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

The Grandmother replied,

“Well, let me think a minute, I was born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill.

There were no: credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens.

Man had not yet invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers.

Clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn’t yet walked on the moon.

Your Grandfather and I got married first, and then lived together.

Every family had a father and a mother.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, “Sir.”

And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, “Sir.”

We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege.

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends -not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CD’s, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President’s speeches on our radios. And I don’t ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.

The term ‘making out’ referred to how you did on your school exam.

Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and instant coffee were unheard of.

We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.

And if you didn’t want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards.

You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, but who could afford one?

Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

In my day, “grass” was mowed, “coke” was a cold drink, “pot” was something your mother cooked in and “rock music” was your grandmother’s lullaby. “Aids” were helpers in the Principal’s office, “chip” meant a piece of wood, “hardware” was found in a hardware store and “software” wasn’t even a word.

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.

No wonder people call us “old and confused” and say there is a generation gap.

GUESS HER AGE NOW!

How old do you think I am?

I bet you have this old lady in mind. You are in for a shock!

This woman would be only 60 years old, Born in 1952!
1952-ford-coupe

…how the world has changed. Now just contemplate, “Why?”

WOW, pretty amazing. My how the World HAS changed, and in my opinion, not necessarily for the better.

Just thought I’d pass it on.

Yesterday the kids were back in school and Mom was diligently preparing for our camping trip this weekend. She’s made lots of progress and has a lot organized. She said to me that we should keep stuff like this packed all the time in case of an emergency.  Good thinking.

I worked and was on and off the phone for most of the day. it’ll be great to have a break for 4 or 5 days. I’m turning my phone off and we probably won’t be able to post on Friday. I will get it in Thursday an then Saturday afternoon but Friday will be tough.

Not a whole lot else going on. It’s actually Tuesday night as I’m writing this so I can get up and go straight to the gym. if anything interesting happens later tonight, I’ll put it in the blog tomorrow or today since most of you are probably reading this on Wednesday morning.

So take care, stay safe and God Bless.

No surgery

We headed out for Vail around 10am and had 1 hour and 15 minutes to make it to our appointment for the oldest ones elbow with the top pediatric hand and elbow doc in the country. Turns out it was a really really smart decision to ask for a referral and go up to see Dr. Viola. This guy is recognized as the preeminent specialist in his speciality in the country. When you go to the Stedman Clinic the walls are lined with photos and jerseys from pro athletes and Olympians from all over the World. We’re very lucky to have these doctors here in Colorado.

We arrived on time and I dropped the oldest and the misses at the front door of the hospital and then took the youngest along with me to renew our p.o.box in Minturn. 20 minutes later we were back and they had already looked at his x-rays. It looked like he may have torn the ligament from the bone so they needed an mri. It was now about noon and the soonest they could get us in was 2:15 so off to lunch we went. The P.A. (physicians assistant) turned out to be my good friend Steve’s wife Heather. They were just at our house 2 weeks ago on the way to the first Bronco game. They own probably the best italian restaurant in Vail called Ti Amo and we’ve been friends and doing business together for years. What a coincidence. Anyhow Heather made sure we received extra special treatment and made the day as easy as possible. After lunch we went back for the mri and the oldest one handled it with no problem. If you haven’t had one, it can be kind of scary. As soon a he was done we headed back upstairs where Heather whisked us right in. It’s all who you know! It turns out that the mri gets sent to doctors in Paolo Alto at Stanford who read it and then confer with the doctors at Steadman. Talk about the best care in the World, doctors at Stanford and Steadman working on his arm. Anyhow Randy (our doctor) came in and put some x-rays up on the screen. He showed us where the break was but told us the ligament was fine. This was great news as it meant no surgery and just a cast for 6 weeks. We were all thrilled. So next up was his cast, he had two options, a regular cast or a waterproof cast. He opted for the waterproof version which has a gore tex pad instead of cotton under the fiber glass casting wrap. Heather took the oldest one into the casting room and let him pick his colors. He chose an orange cast with blue stripes on top for a perfect Bronco colored arm! His arm sure is long and the doctor said thankfully the growth plates were not part of the break but noted that he would be a tall one. Heather told us to come back in two weeks for a cast change but said if he didn’t like the color or anything to just text her and come back anytime, even the next day, and she’d change it. It’s good to have such good friends as you never know how things will work out. Finally at 4:45 pm we were in the car headed home. Aunt B fed the pups and we made it home by about 6. We go back on September 11th for a quick cast change. The oldest is bummed as he is barred from all sports and field day is October 11th. He might make it but probably not. He almost cried when he realized he couldn’t compete in it this year. We’re just all thankful he didn’t need surgery. We had talked to them about docs in Denver and were told the when it comes to kids, the elbow is the most challenging joint to fix in kids. They used to refer some patients to doctors in Denver but are not comfortable doing that anymore as they’ve had to fix too many screw ups from inexperienced docs down here. You do get what you pay for. Just because someone has the title of doctor or lawyer doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing! I don’t even want to think about what the day cost us but in the end it really doesn’t matter, what’s important is that his elbow has been fixed in the best way possible.

Today we’re back to school and I’m sure the oldest will be beaming with his orange and blue striped arm. The youngest will be the first to sign it this morning and he’s quite excited about it. I have a call with the distributor in Virginia at 8:30am and then Seattle at 2pm. Between then I need to run to Greeley which is about an hour away. The misses headache was back in full force yesterday and I think she finally fell asleep around 1am. It hurt so bad she just couldn’t sleep. It was probably the car ride which is too bad as she was headache free just a week ago.

No politics today, lucky you! It’s almost 6am and time to run. Take care and God Bless and we’ll talk to you tomorrow. Oh, I guess no one wants to go anywhere next year, what’s wrong with you people? I mean Hawaii, come on, oh well, we’ll send you all a postcard.

Post 600!

It’s been a long journey to our 600th post. 600 days is a long time. Do any of you remember what you were doing December 31st, 2010? That was the day of our first post. Let’s see, the oldest had just turned 9 and the youngest one was still 6! The misses was headache free and we were both a couple (only 2 or 3) pounds lighter. The Broncos were in disarray with no hope for years and the World didn’t seem quite as screwed up as it does today. A lot can change in 600 days. 600 days from today it will be April 19th, 2014 which seems like some futuristic time when we will all be driving flying cars! Wow, life goes fast.

Personally I think a lot will change in all of our lives in the next 600 days, not only for us individually but for everyone in the whole World. Forget the things in yesterday’s post as those are basically “today” issues. Now they can have impact on where we will be in April 2014 but the important question is where do you want to be? I don’t mean physically but where do you want to be in your life? Is there something you’ve always wanted to do? Take a trip, jump out of an airplane? Go to a Super Bowl, own horses and learn blacksmithing (those two are mine), or paint? Now is the time, what are you waiting for, get off your duff and get to it. None of us are getting any younger. Ok, onto the day.

The oldest went to Jennifer’s for the day where they played with her hamster and did who knows what until he came home at 7:30 last night. Meanwhile the youngest had his friend Nick over and they loaded up their backpacks, grabbed their (toy) guns and set off for the ditch to go hunting. Both boys are obsessed with hunting and exploring these days. I think they just like the idea of the adventure of it all. This isn’t the first time they’ve donned backpacks and headed out to tame the neighborhood. While they were gone, the misses was in the front yard setting up our tent so they had a base camp to return to after their trip. This is all a dry run for our camping trip coming up this Thursday at Steamboat Lake. There is supposed to be isolated showers with highs in the 70’s and we’re praying for good weather as we have a pontoon boat reserved with Nick and his parents who are going along. (these are the folks we had dinner with the other night, our new drama free friends!) Anyone have any enamel cookware for camping? (plates, coffee cups, coffee pot?) I found it for about $70 but really don’t have the money to spend on it. we would pay for shipping if anyone has some.

Nick finally went home but I missed the whole thing as it was a day of football for me. Between the Bronco game and my fantasy football draft, I was MIA all day. The Bronco starters looked good but the 49’rs won the game. I’m sure this made Grandpa Bob happy but remember, it doesn’t count!

How about the earthquake swarm in southern California? I guess they had 15 pretty significant quakes there yesterday in from noon until 2pm. Then last night there was a 7.4 quake in El Salvador. That’s all we need right now, a huge quake in So Cal! Check this out, 408 quakes down there in the past day!

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/US2/32.34.-116.-114.php

I’ve been in a few quakes and it’s pretty wild. Never been in a big one and don’t want to, hope it doesn’t happen.

Today we’re going to try to move the oldest guys doctor appointment from tomorrow to sometime today as he’s off school. The misses forgot this was the case when she made his appointment last week. We’re still praying he doesn’t need surgery.

Ok, 400 days from today, it’ll be October 1st, 2013. That’ll be the day of our 1000th post. What say we all plan a trip to Hawaii? Everyone has to go so if one of you (my Mom) doesn’t want to go that far, then let’s pick someplace like Arizona. What do you think? We have to do something, right? If it was up to us, we’d choose the Virgin Islands or the south of France so Hawaii isn’t all that far fetched. The catch is we all need to be in. Now if one of you just do not feel comfortable going anywhere, just let us know as we don’t want to put any pressure on anyone to do something they do not want to do but we’d like to have 100% participation. If you all say no, maybe we’ll just go on a road show and come visit each and every one of you instead. Or you could all pitch in and we could go to the Virgin islands without you! What do you think?

Alright have a good week, take care, stay safe and buy some extra food now as prices are going up daily. God Bless

Dinner With Friends

The sunrise was stunning this morning.  The sun was an orb of luminescent orange that seeped into pink, purple, and a lovely shade of light blue.  Gorgeous….almost makes it worth only 6 1/2 hours of sleep.

We headed over to our friends at 6p.m.  We took a salad and vino, another couple brought homemade crab cakes that were delicious.

That was the misses, I’m sure you can tell from her descriptive words describing the sunrise. Anyway she was saying, we headed to our friends for dinner at 6. There were 7 of us and 7 kids. Quite the brood. The 7th kid was a left over we brought along. You see the oldest guys classmate came home with us to play around 3 and when it was time to go to dinner, we found out he was going to be home alone until 8 or so! The misses didn’t feel comfortable with this so she called to see if we could bring him along. He ended up coming home with us to spend the night. Now I’m not judging but we wouldn’t leave the oldest one home alone until 8pm while we were across town, to each their own.

Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for! Da da da–da, my NFL Fantasy Football Draft! Now I have Tom Brady on my team and we can opt to keep one player if we like and I’ve decided to keep Brady. Not only is he one of the top two quarterbacks out there, the misses thinks he cute, so we’re both happy. After the draft I’ll be running downtown to the stadium to catch the rest of the pre-season game between the Broncos and the 49’rs, what a great day!

Yesterday the oldest and I ran to Boulder and then made it home around 1. Meanwhile the youngest was hanging out with Mom. Our new bed is great but we took back the mattress pad we bought the day before. it just wasn’t working. We need something though, so the search continues.

I’m not going to go into politics but take a more universal approach to what’s going on these days, check this out, it’s a bit of a read but interesting,

8 Economic Threats That We Were Not Even Talking About At The Beginning Of The Summer

In the crazy times in which we live, it helps to expect the unexpected.  Sometimes you can think that you have it all figured out and then this world can throw a real curveball at you. Very few people anticipated that we would see a massive outbreak of the West Nile Virus in Texas this year or that the Mississippi River would be in danger of drying up after experiencing historic flooding last year.  Who would have thought that we would see the worst drought in more than 50 years or that horrific wildfires would burn nearly 7 million acres of land?  This is why economic conditions are always so hard to predict.  A single “black swan event” can come along and change everything almost overnight.  Our world has become incredibly unstable, and so who really knows what the rest of 2012 will bring?  Will we see a stock market crash?  Will the hurricane season be unusually bad?  Will war erupt in the Middle East?  Will we see a major earthquake on the west coast or even a volcanic eruption?  Will the upcoming election cause an eruption of anger and frustration in America?  We don’t know the answers to those questions yet, and the truth is that we will probably see some things happen that very few of us are anticipating at this point.

This is an exciting time to be a “news junkie”, but unfortunately the vast majority of the news these days is bad.

It is almost as if a “perfect storm” is developing.  Our weather is going crazy, our financial system is on the verge of collapse, our politicians seem more insane than ever, there is evidence of social decay all around us and the drumbeats of war in the Middle East grow louder with each passing day.

As strange as 2012 has been so far, I fear that things are about to get a whole lot stranger.

Not that we haven’t had some very unanticipated events happen this year up to this point.

The following are 8 economic threats that we were not even talking about at the beginning of the summer….

#1 West Nile Virus

What is up with all of the strange disease outbreaks that we have seen so far this year?

Flesh eating disease and the bird flu have both been making global headlines this summer, but in the U.S. right now it is the West Nile Virus that is getting the most attention.

So far more than 1,100 cases of the West Nile Virus have been diagnosed in the United States and more than 41 people have died from it.

More than half of the cases so far have been in Texas, but we have also seen people come down with West Nile Virus in Mississippi, Louisiana, South Dakota, and Oklahoma.

If you live in any of those areas, you might want to do your best to avoid mosquitos for the rest of the summer.

#2 Historic Drought

This summer, the United States has experienced the worst drought that it has seen in more than 50 years.

This weather has been absolutely crippling for farmers and ranchers all over the nation.  As I wrote about the other day, about half of all corn being grown in the U.S. is currently either in “poor” or “very poor” condition.

As the drought has dragged on, many farmers and ranchers have become increasingly desperate.  In fact, one farmer has even been feeding his cows candy in an attempt to deal with rising feed prices.

Needless to say, this drought has been causing commodity prices to soar.

On Tuesday, the price of corn closed at a record $8.38 a bushel, and the price of soybeans closed at $17.30 a bushel.

#3 The Mississippi River Is Drying Up

Thanks to this drought, rivers and lakes all over the United States are drying up.  In fact, there have been reports thatmillions of fish have been dying because water levels have gotten so low in many areas.

Even the mighty Mississippi River has dropped to dangerously low levels.

At this point, the Mississippi is lower than most people living along the river can ever remember.  If it drops much lower, it could potentially have an absolutely devastating impact on the U.S. economy.

A recent NBC News report described what is at stake….

About $180 billion worth of goods move up and down the river on barges, 500 million tons of the basic ingredients for much of the U.S. economy, according to the American Waterways Operators, a trade group. It carries 60 percent of the nation’s grain, 22 percent of the oil and gas and 20 percent of the coal, according to American Waterways Operators. It would take 60 trailer trucks to carry the cargo in just one barge, 144 18-wheeler tankers to carry the oil and gas in one petroleum barge.

If all traffic along the Mississippi was forced to stop, it is estimated that it would cost the U.S. economy about 300 million dollars a day.

And already there have been stoppages along one 11 mile stretch of the river….

Nearly 100 boats and barges were waiting for passage Monday along an 11-mile stretch of the Mississippi River that has been closed because of low water levels, the U.S. Coast Guard said. New Orleans-based Coast Guard spokesman Ryan Tippets said the stretch of river near Greenville, Miss., has been closed intermittently since Aug. 11, when a vessel ran aground.

So what happens if the Mississippi gets even lower?

#4 Wildfires

The extreme heat has also been responsible for the horrific outbreak of wildfires that we have seen in the western United States this year.

So far in 2012, nearly 7 million acres have been burned up.

That is an area about as big as the states of Maryland and Delaware combined.

#5 The Global Elite Hoarding Gold

In the past, the global elite and the mainstream media would mock those who are hoarding gold in anticipation of a major financial collapse.

But now it is the global elite who are hoarding gold.

In a previous article, I discussed how men such as George Soros and John Paulson are investing mind-boggling amounts of money in gold right now.  The amount of money that these two individuals are investing in gold is difficult to comprehend….

There was also news last week in an SEC filing that both George Soros and John Paulson had increased their investment in SPDR Gold Trust, the world’s largest publicly traded physical gold exchange traded fund (ETF).

Mr Soros upped his stake in the ETF to 884,400 shares from 319,550 and Mr Paulson bought 4.53m shares, bringing his stake to 21.3m.

At the current price of about $156 a share, these are new investments of about $88m of Mr Soros’ cash and more than $700m from Mr Paulson’s funds. These are significant positions.

Combined, Soros and Paulson dumped more than three quarters of a billion dollars into gold during the second quarter of 2012 alone.

So what are they anticipating?

The central banks of the world have been very busy hoarding gold as well.  According to the World Gold Council, global central banks were net buyers of 157.5 metric tons of gold during the second quarter of 2012.

Over the past 20 years there has never been a time when global central banks have accumulated that much gold during a single quarter.

So just what in the world is going on?

#6 Recession In The UK

Everyone knew that Greece was in deep trouble.

And everyone knew that Italy and Spain were in deep trouble.

But it was a surprise to see the UK economy plunge deep into recession.  During the second quarter of 2012 alone, the UK economy shrunk by 0.7 percent.

At this point the British economy has contracted for three quarters in a row.

Hopefully things will not get even worse over there.

#7 Major Economic Slowdown In The United States

Considering the fact that the U.S. economy never even came close to recovering from the last recession, it is a bit disheartening to see that it looks like we are headed for another major downturn.

According to Michael Panzer of Financial Armageddon, measurements of economic activity compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia indicate that the U.S. economy is rapidly heading into another recession.  If you doubt this, just check out this chart.

And for a lot more reasons why the U.S. economy is entering another recession, check out this article.

#8 Hauled Off To A Mental Institution For What You Believe

Do you ever worry that what you post on Facebook could get you involuntarily committed to a mental institution?

Well, that is exactly what happened to one military vet recently.

A former Marine named Brandon Raub was hauled off to a mental institution because of what he posted on his Facebook page.

This is how the Economic Policy Journal summarized what happened to Raub….

The muscle used to grab Brandon Raub was local Chesterfield County, VA police. Also present during the grab were agents of the FBI and of the Secret Service.

Both the FBI and the Secret Service claim that they were only observing and not participating in the grab. The Chesterfield County police initially stated that they were only carrying out a request from the federal agencies.

The police also claim Raub is not under arrest, even though he was led away in handcuffs and is not permitted to leave the psychiatric ward of a hospital—even though it appears that Raub is not in  any way in need of psychological care.

I note this happened in the United States of America, with local police, FBI agents and Secret Service taking part.

The claim that Raub is “not under arrest” is completely and totally ridiculous.  The authorities came to his door, slapped handcuffs on him and are holding him in a mental institution against his will.

And now he has been transferred to a facility that is 3 hours away from his family, his supporters and his legal team.

What in the world is America turning into?

The Rutherford Institute is defending Raub, and the following is an excerpt from a statement about this case on their website….

“This is not how justice in America is supposed to work—with Americans being arrested for doing nothing more than exercising their First Amendment rights, forced to undergo psychological evaluations, detained against their will and isolated from their family, friends and attorneys. This is a scary new chapter in our history,” said John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute. “Brandon Raub is no different from the majority of Americans who use their private Facebook pages to post a variety of content, ranging from song lyrics and political hyperbole to trash talking their neighbors, friends and government leaders.”

This is the kind of thing that we have seen under brutal totalitarian regimes in the past.  Dissidents are grabbed by authorities and taken to mental institutions where they are conveniently “disappeared”.

This kind of thing is not supposed to happen in America.

But it is happening.

And you know what?  Before the authorities start attacking people for exercising free speech on Facebook perhaps they should clean up their own house.

It turns out that thousands of DHS employees have been convicted of crimes in recent years.  The following is from a recent CNS News article….

There have been 2,527 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employees and co-conspirators convicted of corruption and other criminal misconduct since 2004, according to a federal auditor.

Our world is becoming a very crazy place.

One thing that most people did see coming this summer was the continuing economic decline in Greece.

At this point Greece is experiencing a full-blown economic depression and it gets worse by the day.

If you can believe it, 1,250 companies have shut down in the second largest city in Greece in 2012 alone.

Ouch.

And many in the financial world believe the the situation in Greece is going to go beyond the breaking point fairly soon.

In fact, analysts at Citibank believe that there is a 90 percent chance that Greece will leave the euro over the next 12 to 18 months.

90 percent?

They sound pretty sure of themselves.

Not that the rest of Europe is in such great shape either.

According to Bloomberg, it looks like Europe will soon be losing about half a million auto industry jobs….

Efforts by PSA Peugeot Citroen (UG) and Fiat SpA (F) to end losses in Europe could cost more than 500,000 people their jobs as automakers and parts suppliers grapple with the effects of the European sovereign debt crisis.

We live in very unusual times.

Things are falling apart all around us and we seem to be rapidly approaching another major economic crisis.

Central banks, governments and Wall Street insiders all seem to be preparing for the worst.

Are you?

Ok, many of us are aware of most or all of these happenings but do we really think about it? Have you given any thought to what these happenings will mean to you and your family? Do you think that none of this will filter down to your little piece of grass that you call home? Do you think that your money is safe in the bank and that the government will always be there to take care of you?

Well, each of us has to decide what we should do about this for ourselves. All I can say is that if you look all through history, you cannot count on the government to be there for you. (The Great Depression to Hurricane Katrina) This is really too bad as you should be able to count on them but they just do not have the resources. Even if they did, our system is not set up to help the individual. All the government can do is throw money at a problem on a massive level like creating some agency that only sucks up the money that is supposed to get to the people that need help. Bigger government is not the answer.

But we’re way passed that, right now you need to do what you can to prepare to take care of yourself by yourself. What if it was 1928 and you knew the great depression in 1929 was coming. What preparations would you make? Well, believe it or not, you now have a chance to decide. All the signs point to a depression that will not only equal but be worse than 29 so think about what YOU want to do now, before it’s too late.

Ok, there you have it, no partisan politics here, just a summary of what we’re facing as a country and a World. I believe the World will survive and we will come out of all this but also believe the bill is coming due, there will be a correction. The only question is, will you be ready for it?

God Bless
